The socio–political and psychological reality that it confronts – the reality of a society that is in various critical ways proving very difficult to transform – is even more complicated than those tackled in the two previous poems. But this poem is also much more personal, more autobiographical than the other two. Serote’s questioning of the society around him – how can one react to poverty? What is this "freedom" that we have so painfully won? Will those who have been separated by apartheid ever really work together? – is in many places subsumed into a coming to terms with some of the complexities and sadnesses of his own life. He vividly recalls the years of struggle, and he mourns and is inspired by the memory of friends who have died for the cause, people whom he was unable to say goodbye to. A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers.
