A SILVER COIN FROM THE WRECK OF THE MERESTEIN, . IN CAPE TOWN
A silver coin ( Silver Rider?) set in a piece of conglomerate with buckshot retrieved under difficult conditions from the wreck of the Merestein by divers of The Atlantic Underwater Club in the early 's. The Merestein (Meresteijin) was on her way to the Dutch East Indies when she was wrecked off Jutten Island, Saldanha Bay in April . Amongst her mixed cargo were coins that had been withdrawn from use in Holland in the 's, for re-use in Java and Borneo. The coins have become collectable world wide, but what makes this one so unique is that it is set in a piece of conglomerate with buckshot, making it "a one of kind". It came into my hands at an auction held by The Atlantic Underwater Club at the then President Hotel in Sea Point in either on . In those days certificates of authenticity were not issued as "men were of honourable" and besides that one knew the divers and club members. Silver Coin & Conglomerate. ditto Buckshot, Conglomerate and Silver Coin. ditto Conglomerate & Silver Coin.
