1920 JOHANNESBURG-DURBAN MOTOR CYCLE RACE (DJ RUN) FRITZ IN SOUTH AFRICA
A Large Medal to Commemorate the 1920 Johannesburg to Durban Motor Cycle Race. The event was won by Fritz Zurcher and this is the medal that was presented to him. Copper-Bronze. Diameter 63.4 mm. Mass 100 gm. Engraved: "1920 F.A.R Zurcher 1st and Fastest". In excellent condition. Comes in the original case from the Rand Motor Cycling Club. Further information on the medal at South African Commemorative Medals and on the race itself at http://www.djrun.co.za. The weather condition for the 1920 race were appalling with stretches of the road (no tar in those day) made virtually impassable by snow and mud. It earned the name “Snowstorm Derby”. The Jock Leyden caricature (circa 1964) of Zurcher comes from the DJ Run website.
