Watsonia meriana Seeds Family: Iridaceae Watsonia is a genus of plants in the Iridaceae family native to South Africa. The genus is named after Sir William Watson, a British botanist. There are 52 species in southern Africa; all are perennial herbs growing from corms and producing erect spikes of showy flowers, and are adapted to a mediterranean-type climate. Watsonia meriana is a South African endemic species from the Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. It was previously known as Watsonia leipoldtii and Watsonia vivipara. Vernacular names include Kanolpypie, Lakpypie, Suurkanol and Suurkanolpypie. It grows to 200cm tall and during spring it bears very attractive red flowers. It is best sown at the start of autumn.
