The Bobartia genus is named after the first curator of the Oxford Botanic Garden, Jacob Bobart. Bobartia gladiata is a South African endemic species from the Western Cape Province. Afrikaans common names include Biesie, Biesieroei, Biesiesroei and Blombiesie. It grows from 20cm to 80cm tall with linear leaves and yellow flowers from spring to summer.
