From that moment, the United States became involved in the war with North Vietnam. During the air war with North Vietnam, the United States conducted three separate air operations: Rolling Thunder, Linebacker, and Linebacker II. The Rolling Thunder campaign lasted from 1965 to 1968 and was the longest of the air operations. Operation Linebacker took place in the spring of 1972, with Linebacker II taking place in December of 1972.
