They are strangers to her. When she is born in 1973, her parents hand her over to a childless peasant couple in the mountains. Aged two, and suffering from malnutrition on a diet of yam leaves, they leave Xiaolu with her illiterate grandparents in a fishing village on the East China Sea. Once Upon a Time in the East takes Xiaolu from a run-down shack to film school in a rapidly changing Beijing, navigating the everyday peculiarity of modern China: censorship, underground art, Western boyfriends. In 2002 she leaves Beijing on a scholarship to study in Britain. Now, after a decade in Europe, her tale of East to West resonates with the insight that can only come from someone who is both an outsider and at home. Author(s): Lieut-Col. J.H. Patterson, D.S.O.  Title:      The Man-Eaters of Tsavo and other East African Adventures (with illustrations)  ISBN: none  Publisher/place: Macmillan and Co, London  This Edition: first edition, second printing  Year of Publication:  1947  First Published: 1907  Binding: hardcover Dustjacket: none, missing (dustjackets were usually discarded in those days)  Number of pages:  350  Weight: 403g  Condition:   Book has a lot of damage unfortunately.  Cover cloths have wear around the edges, with especially heavy wear at the head and tail of spine - previous owner's stuck it down with sellotape, which left behind some glue stains. End-pages have split.  Many of the pages have wrinkled, most likely from getting wet/high humidity.  The back end-page has bad wear - looks like something was stuck on and ripped off.  The text block is still in good condition, stitching/binding is intact and sound, no loose or missing pages, all signatures still in place.  Please see pictures, as these form part of the description.
