2010 ROBBEN ISLAND Historically Important Heritage Site 1 KILOGRAM PROOF SILVER MEDALLION IN A PIANO VARNISH BOX  WITH A CLEAR WINDOW INSERT WITH A CERTIFICATE AT AN ASTONISHINGLY LOW PRICE ROBBEN ISLAND As of 2 April 2019, Robben Island has officially been declared a Marine Protected Area by the Department of Environmental Affairs. Robben Island has not only been used as a prison. It was a training and defence station in World War II (1939-1945) and a hospital for leprosy patients, and the mentally and chronically ill (1846-1931). In the 1840s, Robben Island was chosen for a hospital because it was both secure (isolating dangerous cases) and healthy (providing a good environment for cure). During this time, political and common-law prisoners were still kept on Robben Island. As there was no cure and little effective treatment available for leprosy, mental illness and other chronic illnesses in the 1800s, Robben Island was a kind of prison for the hospital patients too.   Since 1997 Robben Island has been a museum. The museum on the Island is a dynamic institution, which acts as a focal point of South African heritage. The Robben Island Museum runs educational programmes for schools, youths and adults, facilitates tourism development, conducts ongoing research related to Robben Island and fulfils an archiving function. Russia, Russian Cities, Saint Petersburg, Tsarskoye Selo, Catherine Palace Edition Technical Specs Presentation Country:   Metal Purity:    Gold Plated, Gilded Box:   Year of Issue:   Weight:   1 oz CoA:   Face Value:   Dimensions:   40     Quality:       Mintage:     New token with capsule Tsarskoye Selo (Russian: ¿¿?¿¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿¿?; IPA: [?tsarsk?? s???lo]; "Tsar's Village") was the town containing a former Russian residence of the imperial family and visiting nobility, located 24 kilometers (15 mi) south from the center of Saint Petersburg.[1] It is now part of the town of Pushkin and of the World Heritage Site Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments. During the Soviet times it was known as Detskoye Selo.In the 17th century, the estate belonged to a Swedish noble. Its original Finnish name is usually translated as "a higher ground". Max Vasmer, on the other hand, derives this toponym from the Finnish word for island, "saari": "Saaren kyl?" = "Island village". In any case, the Finnish name came to be pronounced by the 18th-century Russians as "Sarskoye Selo", later changed to "Tsarskoye Selo" (i.e., "the royal village"). ____________________________________________________  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.
