From Claudia Rankine to Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah, Kiese Laymon to Carol Anderson, these voices shine a light on the darkest corners of American history, wrestle with the struggles the country faces today and imagine a better future. Envisioned as a response to The Fire Next Time, James Baldwin's groundbreaking 1963 essay collection, The Fire This Time considers the black experience in modern America. Significant progress has been made in the fifty years since Baldwin's essays were published, but America is a long distance away from a post-racial society - a truth that must be confronted if the country is to continue to work towards change. Baldwin's 'fire next time' is now upon us, and it needs to be talked about. Sage, urgent and impassioned, this is an essential collection edited by one of America's greatest writers. Martinus Nijhoff, The Hague, Netherlands, 1975. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. First Edition. This Is The Five Volume Set Published For The Foundation For The Study Of Plural Societies.Edited by Willem A. Veenhoven and OthersAll five books are in good condition, though one or two of the dust jackets show some wear. They have been covered in protective plastic. Very good reference books. The five volume set sells for up to R7000 on abebooks.com The Foundation for Plural Societies (The Hague) commissioned scholars from all parts of the world to prepare a series of case sties, which are published in these volumes. Some of them cover the spectrum of rights and discrimination in an entire country (Great Britain, West Germany, Peru). Others deal with particular groups, such as Blacks in United States, Aborigines in Australia, the Kurds in the Middle East. Still others discuss problems of social structure such as the caste system in India or marriage law and women's rights in Islamic countries. Attention in the United Nations has been focussed on racial discrimination. Yet groups defined as racial are only one of a number that appear as discriminators or victims of discrimination. The case studies, which are factual in approach, show inequalities in the distribution of power status, opportunities and rewards in all the countries studied. They also show that discrimination on grounds other than racial - that is, because of differing religion, language, lifestyle or political beliefs - causes far more human misery and denial of human rights than discrimination motivated by biological differences. Perspective readers will find all these case studies informative and some of them profoundly disturbing. Those who believe that their countries foreign policy should not be limited to pure nationalist interests but should show concern for basic rights and freedoms throughout the world may e in some cases be inclined to question whether diplomatic efforts within and outside the United Nations are directed as effectively as they might be.

Sign and Taboo: Perspectives on the Poetic Fiction of Yvonne Vera Yvonne Vera's Nehanda (1993) signaled the presence of new and remarkable writing in Zimbabwe, and her four subsequent novels have confirmed her stature as one of the most important African novelists of the 1990s. Her art is alert to public life; and manifests the decisive moments of Zimbabwe's anticolonial resistance, the growth of the township culture and the competing demands of the city and the rural home. She records public experience through the consciousness of her female characters; but in prose as densely allusive as poetry, does not allow her style to register with a conventional realism, her characters always experiencing more than they understand, and seeing more than they and the reader may recognize. This work brings together critics from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Britain, the Caribbean, and the United States, demonstrating through a diversity of approaches the complex beauty of Vera's work. It shows how Vera expanded the formal possibilities of the African novel by placing the experiences of women at the center of literature, and in so doing, retold and recreated Zimbabwe's history and imaginative life. David Lammy Foreword by West Indies Cricketer Sir Clive Lloyd Voices of the Windrush Generation is a powerful collection of stories from the men, women and children of the Windrush generation - West Indians who emigrated to Britain between 1948 and 1971 in response to labour shortages, and in search of a better life. Edited by journalist and bestselling author David Matthews, this book paints a vivid portrait of what it meant for those who left the Caribbean for Britain during the early days of mass migration. Through his own, and many other stories, Matthews explores: why and how so many people came to Britain after World War II, their hopes and dreams, the communities they formed and the difficulties they faced being separated from family and friends while integrating into an often hostile society. We hear how lives were transformed, and what became of the generations that followed, taking the reader right up to the present day, and the impact of the current Windrush deportation scandal upon everyday people. At once a nostalgic treasure trove of human interest, which unearths the real stories behind the headlines, and a celebration of black British culture, Voices of the Windrush Generation is an absorbing and important book that gives a platform to voices that need to be heard.
