Cassell, 2002. Book Condition: Used. This Book is in Very good Condition. Clean Copy With Light Amount of Wear. 256 pp. Summary: The impact of World War II opened the door for weak and impoverished nations to develop military means of defeating modern armies. In China, Korea, Vietnam, Palestine, Cuba, Ireland, Africa, and the former Soviet Union, where battles still rage today--indeed, all over the globe--impassioned revolutions, marked by irregular warfare, guerilla insurgency, and terrorism, turned nations upside down in the name of liberation. Vividly illustrated and packed with punch, this dynamic account of endemic violence, epic character, and the astonishing resourcefulness of commanders and combatants probes the nation in arms as a product of the Western legacy and of communism, religion, and tribal or familial loyalties. A chronology and biographies of crucial figures help delineate the lines leading backward to the prewar era.

Portugal's three wars in Africa in Angola, Mozambique and Portuguese Guinea (Guin-Bissau today) lasted almost 13 years - longer than the United States Army fought in Vietnam. Yet they are among the most underreported conflicts of the modern era. Commonly referred to as Lisbon's Overseas War (Guerra do Ultramar) or in the former colonies, the War of Liberation (Guerra de Liberta£o), these struggles played a seminal role in ending white rule in Southern Africa. Though hardly on the scale of hostilities being fought in South East Asia, the casualty count by the time a military coup d'tat took place in Lisbon in April 1974 was significant. It was certainly enough to cause Portugal to call a halt to violence and pull all its troops back to the Metropolis. Ultimately, Lisbon was to move out of Africa altogether, when hundreds of thousands of Portuguese nationals returned to Europe, the majority having left everything they owned behind. Independence for all the former colonies, including the Atlantic islands, followed soon afterwards. Lisbon ruled its African territories for more than five centuries, not always undisputed by its black and mestizo subjects, but effectively enough to create a lasting Lusitanian tradition. That imprint is indelible and remains engraved in language, social mores and cultural traditions that sometimes have more in common with Europe than with Africa. Today, most of the newspapers in Luanda, Maputo - formerly Lourenco Marques - and Bissau are in Portuguese, as is the language taught in their schools and used by their respective representatives in international bodies to which they all subscribe. Indeed, on a recent visit to Central Mozambique in 2013, a youthful member of the American Peace Corps told this author that despite having been embroiled in conflict with the Portuguese for many years in the 1960s and 1970s, he found the local people with whom he came into contact inordinately fond of their erstwhile 'colonial overlords'. As a foreign correspondent, Al Venter covered all three wars over more than a decade, spending lengthy periods in the territories while going on operations with the Portuguese army, marines and air force. In the process he wrote several books on these conflicts, including a report on the conflict in Portuguese Guinea for the Munger Africana Library of the California Institute of Technology. Portugal's Guerrilla Wars in Africa  represents an amalgam of these efforts. At the same time, this book is not an official history, but rather a journalist's perspective of military events as viewed by somebody who has made a career of reporting on overseas wars, Africa's especially. Venter's camera was always at hand; most of the images used between these covers are his. His approach is both intrusive and personal and he would like to believe that he has managed to record for posterity a tiny but vital segment of African history. 1912 ex-library hardcover with 452 pages. R60 postage in SA. Funston played an important role in capturing Filipino leader Emilio Aguinaldo, on 23 March 1901 at Palanan. The capture of Aguinaldo made Funston a national hero, although his reputation was somewhat tarnished when details of the capture became known--Funston's party had gained access to Aguinaldo's camp by pretending to surrender to the Filipinos. In 1906, Funston was in command of the Presidio base in San Francisco, California when the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake hit. Funston took command of the city under martial law. With the US entry into World War I, President Woodrow Wilson favored Funston to head up the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). His intense focus on work would lead to health problems, first with a case of indigestion in January 1917, followed by a fatal heart attack at the age of 51 years in San Antonio, Texas.

This is the true story of a young guerrilla commander brought up in a Christian family in Rhodesia, a former colony of Britain. Exposed to the excesses of a colonial regime where race and racism determined ones status in society, and influenced by the radical anti-racial views of his parents and later of fellow students and work mates, his character began to change. A chance encounter with a captured guerrilla fighter helped complete the metamorphic transformation of his rebel character, and was catalytic to his decision to cross into Mozambique to join the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA), the military wing of the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) led by Robert Mugabe, which was waging a protracted revolutionary armed struggle to liberate Zimbabwe. Known by his nom de guerre, Dragon Patiripakashata, he led several armed guerrilla incursions into Rhodesia, before being promoted to the General Staff and appointed an instructor. For the final eighteen months of the war, until 1980, he served as ZANUs Chief Representative to Socialist Ethiopia.  Mutambara invites the reader to view the Rhodesian bush war through the eyes of a guerrilla commander, experience the trials and tribulations of a freedom fighter, the satisfaction of working among the masses, and the joyous celebration of achieving freedom and independence. He outlines the psyche of those who engage in revolutionary armed struggle and why, even when exposed to extreme hardship and continual assault by a superior military adversary, they remain committed to their cause. This book also takes a different view of Mugabe, reviled by most Western governments and yet who remains immensely popular among his people PAPERBACK: 280 PAGES WITH 280 PAGES & 30 B/W PHOTOS & MAPS Published June 2014

Soft cover Published by Ashanti Publishing in  - first edition   Very good condition with only a bit of curling to edges 296 pages with numerous B&W photographs  This volume is a complete chronicle of Portugal's war in Angola from to , and of the demise of the Portuguese empire. It is a popular version of the author's doctoral thesis which dissects the events leading up to the armed insurrection of and the subsequent uprisings by the various national liberation movements, and proceeds to examine the nature of the war that was to end where yet another conflict was merely to begin. The book describes the period until 25 April , and provides a background for the analysis and comprehension of subsequent and present events in Angola. The nature and development of the war, with all its tragic repercussions, is also a case study in revolutionary warfare. It was ultimately to become a war attrition that Portugal could never win, despite her gradual ascendancy on the battlefield. As Portugal lost control over the process of decolonization, Angola was to be left to the icy machinations of the Cold War that had come to the region with a vengeance.         We do combine postage so click on image to see other books we are selling
