After bitter debate, South Africa, a dominion of the British Empire at the time, declared war on Germany five days after the invasion of Poland in September 1939. Thrust by the British into the campaign against Erwin Rommels German Afrika Korps in North Africa, the South Africans fought a see-saw war of defeats followed by successes, culminating in the Battle of El Alamein, where South African soldiers made a significant contribution to halting the Desert Foxs advance into Egypt. This is the story of an army committed somewhat reluctantly to a war it didnt fully support, ill-prepared for the battles it was tasked with fighting, and sent into action on the orders of its senior alliance partner. At its heart, however, this is the story of men at war. Paperback, 352 pages

South Africa was under serious terrorist attacks during the 1980's. Those attacks were mainly committed by Communists and the ANC. The South African Police as the main law enforcement agency had the task of maintaining law and order in an atmosphere, where the opposing sides only paid lip service to the international accepted protocols and conventions. Queensbury rules had been thrown over board and nobody knew where the next mine, grenade, bomb or bullet would be delivered. After 1994, the so-called first democratic election which brought Nelson Mandela to power, the former terrorists became heroes and those who's duty it was to serve and protect the villains. It is against this background that the author, who is known for his expertise and objectivity endeavors, in a concise manner, to put into perspective the other side of the story. The purpose is not to justify either the means or the ends, but rather for the thinking people in society to judge for themselves. Paperback, 198 pages.  Published  1997 ***Contains graphic images - for mature readers only***

Hard cover, 222 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. Fold out Paterson Family Trees Map in the back This book provides both the history of the growth of Port Elizabeth, and the story of John Patterson and his influence on the town. 'The Story of John Patterson and his Times () has been written for three main reasons. Firstly, in all humility, we have tried to follow in the steps of the late John Bond by bringing to the notice of South Africans some more British pioneers of the Nineteenth Century who helped to shape the historical map of the Colony, while acknowledging the brave part played by the stoical Dutch farmers in the development of Algoa Bay. Secondly, we have recreated the life of John Paterson and others connected with him for the interest of their descendants. Finally, in the year , when, on July 17th, Port Elizabeth celebrates the hundredth year of its Municipality we wished to honour Joshua Williamson Kemp, Father of the first Board of Town Commissioners in , and John Paterson - "Whose Monument is Port Elizabeth" - who, already a great statesman in , had his life been spared, might conceivably have overshadowed Cecil Rhodes; not only in the highest parliamentary honours, but as the visionary who first dreamt of extending the boundaries of European influence in Southern Africa.'

This is the thoroughly researched account of the life and times of a South African WW2 pilot, the author's father, Ted. It is highly personal, drawing on family history and changing lifestyles as the central figure fights his way through a series of experiences, flying coastal strike missions in the Mediterranean and North Africa, then in the Far East against the Japanese.  The story gets off to an engrossing operational start before tracking back to the personal family story to provide a context. Images of a lost world haunt pages that relate to an era in which a decisive individual could challenge the system and get results.  As the story of Coastal Command is often overlooked, the exploits recorded here serve as an overdue reminder of the unit and the part it played in the Allied effort.  Ted's wartime exploits include the first mid-air skyjacking in history; the daring solitary attack on the Italian fleet after he had lost the rest of his strike team; narrowly surviving being burned in a horrific air crash in the Ceylon jungle; many emergency crash-landings; and finally as commander of 27 Squadron carrying out dangerous rescue operations behind enemy lines for members of the Indian Resistance Movement operating in the Burmese jungle. These exploits, written largely in the voice of Ted Strever, and extensively illustrated with photographs, come vividly to life. Hardback, 228 pages. Published August 2014

How We Kept the Flag Flying: The Story of the Siege of Ladysmith   by Donald Macdonald 1999 - 289 pages Hard Cover in Good Condition.A Covos Books Anglo-Boer War Centenary Edition Excerpt from How We Kept the Flag Flying: The Story of the Siege of Ladysmith In this book I have attempted no specialist's description of the siege and battles of Ladysmith, but have given just the every-day impressions and sensations of an observer to whom war, with all its thrilling incidents and vivid colour, was a new and strange experience. It is not so much a history of the siege as a story of the siege written while the events were fresh in the mind. In a calm retrospective view much might be added, much omitted, but the complete military history of Ladysmith may be left to the historian and the expert. Without being consciously in error, I have sought to give the reader some idea of the moods and colour of the time. In the multiplicity of names there may be some confusion; thus I have spoken of the fight at Rietfontein as Tinta Inyoni, and of Wagon Hill as Caesar's Hill, since local opinion always differed as to which was correct. With a full appreciation of the patriotism and pride of race which has made Australasia a fighting unit in the British Empire, I dedicate this book to my fellow-countrymen who took part in the South African Campaign.
