Stunning book.!! Book in VG Condition. Glossy pages.. Heavy book in Slip case,. Slip case slightly damaged at one corner. All else in VG condition. A Treasure of knowledge.   "The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals" covers each of Southern Africa's 343 mammal species. From the diminutive shrews to the weird and wonderful bats, the carnivores, primates and ungulates (hoofed animals), this guide represents the work of 72 leading authorities in the field of mammal research. More than 400 colour photographs, many submitted by the region's most renowned wildlife photographers, were selected from an initial shortlist of 1,000. Wherever possible these portray the animals in their natural environments and many depict interesting aspects of behaviour too. The guide is divided into three main sections. The first and most extensive section covers land mammals - from shrews, moles and bats to primates, rabbits, rodents, primates, carnivores and ungulates. The second section embraces the marine mammals, comprising the whales, dolphins and seals. The third part of the guide covers exotic (introduced) species, such as the house rat, the grey squirrel and the fallow deer. In most instances, the species are introduced in a general text that is followed by more detailed biological notes covering aspects such as habitat, breeding, food and feeding methods and social system. A distribution map is provided for each animal. Supplementary essays at the front of the guide offer an even deeper insight into the subject, covering evolution, mammal classification, habitats, mammal adaptations and conservation. Selected further reading, a glossary of terms and a list of alternative names for each of the major languages within the sub-region are also provided.

Praying Mantis In his early years, growing up on a Dutch farm in the deep interior of the southern African Cape, Cupido Cockroach became the greatest drinker, liar, fornicator and fighter of his region. Coming under the spell of a woman, the soap-boiler Anna, and particularly under the influence of the great Dr Johannes Theodorus van der Kemp of the London Missionary Society, whose own early profligate life dramatically changed course after a tragedy in Holland inspired him to dedicate himself to the abused native peoples of Southern Africa, Cupido is then made the first Khoi or 'Hottentot' missionary ordained at the Cape of Good Hope. Received into the fold of the Church, Cupido passionately turns against all his early beliefs. After being drawn into the fierce struggle between the missionaries and the Dutch colonists, he rises to some prominence and is appointed as missionary in a remote and arid region in the North-western Cape. But this also marks the beginning of his decline, as the Society abandons him to his fate. One by one, the members of his congregation disappear into the desert, so that in the end, abandoned even by his wife and children, he is left to preach to the stones and thorn trees and tortoises, returning to the dream-world of his people. In a heady mixture of comedy and tragedy, the real and the magical, and immersed in the ancient, earthy, African world of magic and dreams, PRAYING MANTIS explores through the historical figure of Cupido Cockroach the origins of racial tension in the shadowlands between myth and history. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 9 working days In the 1940s, the ANC's Youth League transformed the organisation into a defiant, mass-based force that fought for freedom. Oliver Tambo was a prominent member of that Youth League, but his most important role was still to come. In 1960, the South African Government banned the ANC. Tambo was appointed to continue the ANC's fight - from outside the country. During this time, he helped strengthen the ANC's organisation and assisted in establishing underground structures inside the country. He brought the struggle for liberation in South Africa to the attention of the rest of the world and, in doing so, won the admiration and the support of all those with whom he made contact. Thirty years later, Tambo returned to his motherland and handed the ANC back to the people, intact and triumphant. They Fought for Freedom tells the life stories of southern African leaders who struggled for freedom and justice. In spite of the important roles they played in the history of southern Africa, most of these leaders have been largely ignored by the history books. The series tells their stories in an entertaining manner, in clear language and aims to restore them to their rightful place in history. Paperback. English. Jacana. 2014. In good condition. The side of the sun at noon is a quest, a journey of discovery. In the mid-17th century when the Dutch first settled at the Cape of Good Hope, built their fortress and began trading with the indigenous Khoikhoi, they were told of a mysterious people called the Chobona, who lived in stone houses deep in the interior of the country, were rich in gold and cattle and had long hair and pale skins. Believing them to be the people of Monomotapa, the legendary southern African empire from whom the Portuguese obtained their gold, the Dutch made every effort to reach them. "Volunteers" were selected, plans drawn up, maps supplied and expedition after expedition dispatched. None succeeded in finding the elusive Chobona. In the centuries to come historians would dismiss the Chobona as fantasy, blaming the stories on what they believed to be the over-active imagination of Eva, a young Khoikhoi girl who was the Dutchmen's main interpreter. Yet the rumours never ceased. And, as our knowledge of the past has grown, so too has the possibility that the rumours were real. The side of the sun at noon explores the truth behind the rumours, following in the footsteps of the early explorers in what is an innovative and engaging interweaving of a rich array of sources, from ancient Arab writings and indigenous oral traditions, to contemporary historical documents and modern archaeological discovery. This book makes you challenge the accepted notions of our history making you look, and look again.
