John Dovey did his National Service in the SADF in 1985-1986. He has served since then in three Citizen Force Regiments, and is still serving. This compilation of poems is his attempt to preserve some of the thoughts and feelings of the soldiers who were in the SADF during the "Border War" period. The poems in this compilation are mostly from that period. There are a few poems from Cubans and one from a British soldier, that fit into the theme of the compilation. Some are in English, some in Afrikaans and there is even one in Spanish. The poems are all heart-felt ones that reflect the mood and emotion of the times. There are a surprising number that deal with loneliness and fear, which two things any soldier will know are constant companions. This book is above all about the commonality of experience that all soldiers share, and about the human face of the individuals of which an "army" is comprised. Paperback, 59 pages. Published November 2006

1990.  Hard cover with dust cover. 875 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound, neat and clean. The dust cover has wear and tear.  Over 1kg. ABOUT FACE is the extraordinary story of the life of one of America's most unique fighting men. On June 27, 1971, David Hackworth became the US Army's most outspoken critic, denouncing on network television the American war effort in Vietnam as tragically misguided. Hackworth says in About Face that he never would have believed it if someone had told him he would be 'checking out of the Army any way but feet first'. Hackworth's incredible life story has been a consistent bestseller for over six years in the US. It is a remarkable account of a man whose unmatched battlefield achievements have made him a living legend. But the medals and accolades did not counter his growing disillusionment with the Vietnam War, which he came to see as immoral and unwinnable. Finally, ABOUT FACE is a stunning indictment, not just of the Pentagon's fundamental misunderstanding of the Vietnam conflict, but of the bureaucracy and self-interest that fueled that lost war.

Softcover. English. David Philip. 2008. ISBN: 9780864867148. 407pp. Good condition in softcover. Soldier Blue is a superbly written account of growing up in Rhodesia, centering on the author’s experiences as a young conscript during the ‘bush war’. Against the backdrop of the rise and fall of Ian Smith’s Rhodesian rebel state (1965-1980), Soldier Blue tells the story of an English boy who grew up in Africa, a soldier who fought, and a dissenter who struggled to define himself against such a backdrop. Sometimes you can’t choose your own battles.
