Virtua Fighter 4 offers a selection of thirteen characters to engage in one-on-one beat ’em up action similar to previous titles inthe series. Most of them are from previous games, but two of them are brand new to this game. VF4 has the standard array of modes, like Arcade, VS, and Practice, and it also has a new feature, called “A.I. Sparring”, in which you train a player, controlled by the computer, by using various moves and techniques. There are a lot of arenas to choose from. Some are interactive, in which you can break away from the main ring. When fighting on sand or snow, your fighter will leave footprints. When you’re in water, you will make splashes. If you hit your opponent hard enough on a concrete floor, his body might break that part of the floor into chunks. Each fighter has a wide array of moves, from your standard punches and kicks to ten hit combos and specials.

The Sims 4 is the fourth main game in the real-time life simulation / management series. Just like the previous games one or more custom characters are created through Create-a-Sim to live in a house designed by the player. As their lives unfold based on the environment, relationships and specific traits, the player gets to manage the life, needs to organize activities, attend to needs, and react to moods, with non-linear gameplay and no direct control. The character creation process has been expanded. Players choose a gender, age (from child to elder), look and outfit. The voice can be adjusted from clear to brash and a specific walking style can be chosen to reflect the personality. Next to a selection of various facial and body features, every element of the character can also be tweaked by holding and dragging with a large choice of colours and accessories. Players also choose a lifetime aspiration from a number of fields such as athleticism, creativity, family, knowledge, love … with deeper choices for each. Next, three traits (one less than the previous game) are selected such as active, cheerful, gloomy, romantic or self-assured, and specific characteristics such as hobbies, lifestyle and social intelligence. The game puts a larger emphasis on personalities and social interactions. Sims are now for instance also able to multitask, rather than completing actions one by one, and these are also affected by moodlets and emotions. While playing players are rewarded for reacting to moods, providing temporary buffs or permanent enhancements to the Sims, for small accomplishments. The available interactions are largely based on the chosen personality. The bottom left of the interface holds an action queue where various activities the Sim wants to do are listed. At the bottom are time controls to manage how time passes. There is free camera rotation and various zoom levels to follow the activity from any angle. Sims level up by practicing activities. The game’s main currency Simoleons is used to provide for the chosen lifestyle and to buy new items. The build mode has been made easier as items now often click together to form a coherent structure. Entire rooms can be picked up and placed elsewhere and the push-and-pull tool from the character creation mode can be used to alter the walls. The game has two neighbourhoods with ten public venues in total, such as bars, a museum, a park, a gym, and a library. Work locations and co-workers are not shown in the game. The Create-a-Style mode from the previous game where surfaces and textiles could be painted with a custom design has been dropped in favour of predetermined colour sets. The game also no longer employs a seamless open world for different locations, but links together smaller environments with loading screens. All of the terrain has been flattened, without hills, and transportation is no longer present.

Guitar Hero 5 is the fifth main game in the musical rhythm series. Similar to the previous title,Guitar Hero: World Tour, the focus is on a band-experience, with a lead and bass guitar, drums and vocals. The title is available standalone or bundled with the instruments. General new features introduced to the gameplay include drop-in/drop-out play, where it is possible to join in the middle of a song or stop playing without interrupting gameplay. There is also a new Challenges section in the Career mode. The different game versions are identical, except for the PS2 version that lacks online game modes and downloadable content, drop-in/drop-out play and song challenges. It is also limited to two instruments and the multitap is not supported. The Wii version is very similar to the major console versions, including downloadable content on SD cards, multiplayer through the global Wii address book, and the Mii Freestyle mode from the previous game. It also supports interaction with the Nintendo DS to edit videos and provides access to the Roadie Battle mode, similar to the main battle mode ofGuitar Hero III, where players complete mini-games on the Nintendo DS to sabotage the players on the console.

As with previous games in the series, gameplay combines tactical, squad- and cover-based third-person combat with role-playing, in the form of different classes, customizable upgrades and dialogue choices. As with thesecond partof the trilogy, save files from the previous games can be imported with decisions being made in the first two games having an effect on the new situations. In addition to combat difficulty selection, the player is offered a choice of three modes before starting the game. The “action” mode bypasses conversation choices, displaying them as non-interactive cutscenes; the “story” mode keeps choices intact, but lowers combat difficulty. The “role-playing” mode reflects most closely the gameplay of the two previous games, containing both choices and more challenging combat. Most of combat-related and character development features have been carried out from the preceding installment. Melee combat plays a somewhat larger role: certain classes possess the ability to execute powerful charged close-combat moves. Weapons can be modified with two enhancements each, gaining more firepower, large magazines, increased accuracy, etc. Like before, abilities and powers can be upgraded when leveling up; each of them now offer two upgrade choices per level, and selecting one of them will lock the other enhancement permanently. Entirely new to the series is a multiplayer option in the form of the co-op game mode Galaxy at War. It involves up to four players cooperatively taking over enemy strongholds. Players can take part in Galaxy at War as any race in the game’s universe.

Bound by Flame is an action RPG set in a fantasy universe. The player controls the mercenary Vulcan who protects the lands against a siege by the seven ice lords and their minions. He starts as an experienced fighter in the game, but early on he messes up summoning a fire demon and instead becomes possessed by it. This introduces a duality that forms the backbone of the game, as he can either attempt to restore his humanity or give in to the possession and embrace the powers. This change is guided through his actions, either helping villagers or working against them, and not only leads to visual change – either restoring the human form or slowly transforming into a fiery demon – but also to branching story paths with multiple endings. The game offers three skills trees (fighter, ranger and pyromancer) each with their own abilities. The fighter path stresses melee combat with swords, axes and warhammers. Vulcan is able to chain together attacks into combos and also needs to dodge and parry incoming attacks. Ranger introduces a stealthy path, for instance offering twin daggers to sneak up from behind or spells that for instance slow down time for enemies. Pyromancer delves into the fire powers of the possession offering all kinds of spells, explosives, traps and weapons enhanced with fire. The skills are divided into four tiers: novice, amateur, expert and master – narrowing the choices with each new tier. All of the paths lead to an ultimate ability. While fighting it is possible to switch stances between warrior and rogue. The game offers a selection of companions and includes weapon crafting with various modifiers. Rather than an open-world RPG, it divides the game world into smaller hubs, one for each chapter, offering freedom to explore and do quests in any order until the entire hub is complete, and then moving on to the next chapter.
