They relate research designs to each of the traditions of enquiry and provide strategies for writing introductions to studies, collecting data, analyzing data, writing a narrative and verifying results. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days This book explores graded expressions of modality, a rich and underexplored source of insight into modal semantics. Studies on modal language to date have largely focussed on a small and non-representative subset of expressions, namely modal auxiliaries such as must, might, and ought. Here, Daniel Lassiter argues that we should expand the conversation to include gradable modals such as more likely than, quite possible, and very good. He provides an introduction to qualitative and degree semantics for graded meaning, using the Representational Theory of Measurement to expose the complementarity between these apparently opposed perspectives on gradation. The volume explores and expands the typology of scales among English adjectives and uses the result to shed light on the meanings of a variety of epistemic and deontic modals. It also demonstrates that modality is deeply intertwined with probability and expected value, connecting modal semantics with the cognitive science of uncertainty and choice. Features Summary This book explores graded expressions of modality, such as more likely than and quite possible, which provide a rich and underexplored source of insight into modal semantics... Containing the full complement of information required for the mandatory Theoretical Foundations of Nursing course for PhD programs, this text disseminates the foundational skills needed for excellence in research and scholarship. The book examines in-depth the components of nursing theory and the types and uses of theory in nursing research and practice, and teaches students about the nature and use of concepts, how to think critically, and "ways of thinking" that are essential for nursing research. This text contains information for developing concepts and mid-range theory, using a variety of qualitative research methods, developing theoretical scope by linking mid-range theories, and moving knowledge towards certainty and evidence. It also illustrates the construction of frameworks for quantitative inquiry, exploring theory in mixed-method design, and how theory develops knowledge. Each method includes a description of the methodological approach and examples of subsequent concept or theory development. The text includes several methods for the development of concepts, micro- and mid-range theories using qualitative research, and the new trend towards moving these qualitative theories to practice-based evidence. Each section of the book contains pragmatic examples and supplementary activities that encourage inquiry. An Instructors Manual facilitates the teaching of content to enhance student learning. This second edition of the Handbook of Research Methods on Trust provides a fully updated and extended account of quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods for empirical research. While many researchers have already drawn inspiration and insight from the previous edition, the dynamic development of trust research calls for further and deeper engagement with methodological issues, particular methods, practical research experience, and current challenges and innovations as offered by this new edition. Identifying innovative methods for researching trust, this important Handbook will prove invaluable for students and academics in the social sciences who are interested in trust, particularly postgraduates planning empirical research on trust, undergraduates researching issues of trust, faculty teaching research-based courses on trust and related topics, and experienced trust researchers looking for reflection, discussion and inspiration. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 7-10 working days once ordered) Although classical electromagnetic (EM) field theory is typically embedded in vector calculus and differential equations, many of the basic concepts and characteristics can be understood with precursory mathematical knowledge. Completely revised and updated, Basic Introduction to Bioelectromagnetics, Second Edition facilitates the process of interdisciplinary research by introducing life scientists to the basic concepts of EM fields. This new edition outlines elements of EM that are helpful to life scientists working with physicists and electrical engineers. Each concept is presented with an associated application and discussion. Example applications include hyperthermia, neural stimulation, MRI, NMR, ultrasound, and cardiac pacing/defibrillation. With the liberal use of diagrams and graphs, this qualitative and illustrative point of access: * Covers the entire frequency spectrum from direct current (DC) up through optical frequencies * Includes more than 200 illustrations with 40 medical applications * Incorporates examples from real applications to explain concepts * Concentrates on the qualitative explanation of the key concepts, fundamental principles, and characteristic behaviors of EM fields, without mathematical rigor * Offers practical rules of thumb to understand real situations * Requires only an algebra background, in contrast to typical EM books that require vector calculus and partial differential equations Offering a simplified view of a very complex subject, this second edition provides an accessible introduction for life scientists and medical technologists on how EM fields work, what controls them, and the factors important to experimental setups. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days Taste is a funny thing. Not ha-ha funny, but peculiar funny. Even the definition of the word is a little confusing. It is both a verb and a noun. It means to eat or to drink; to have or to get experience; a manner or a style. This, then, is the first barrier to enjoying wine. All too often the wine lover is fed information from a taster rather than from his own palate because the tools necessary, the how-tos of tasting itself, aren't readily available. Sure, we all know what we like and dislike, but the world of wine, once it is opened up, is a wondrous and varied one. What is needed to capture the full breadth of wine is a knowledge of how to read your own senses and an understanding of what factors determine your preferences. Winetaster's Secrets focuses on this very facet of wine. Step by step, this book reveals how it's done; how the experts, and now you, can determine and evaluate wine quality. It does so in a manner that neither simplifies or complicates the subject. The object is threefold: -- to encourage the reader to expand the use of his/her natural senses, increasing the enjoyment of all wines -- to help develop the ability to judge consistently and accurately the quality of a wide array of wines, independent of the tastes of others -- to foster appreciation of the differences in qualitative and nonqualitative wine characteristics -- In addition, Winetaster's Secrets addresses the issues that have often been avoided in previous publications, including: -- age in the taster and the wine -- burnt wine -- brandy -- how to taste and judge it -- a chilling experience -- ice wine -- tasting techniques -- scoring systems, how they work and which system work better than others -- The result is a precise, enjoyable book. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days This book challenges the conventional wisdom that policy performance is the most important determinant of regime support. It does so by focusing on two countries where performance and support do not match. Chile is the economic envy of every country in Latin America, yet support has been surprisingly anemic. By contrast, Venezuela managed to maintain extremely high levels of support during the reign of Hugo Chavez despite severe failures of governance. Resolution of these paradoxes requires turning away from policy decisions and focusing instead on how those decisions are made. Taking inspiration from democratic theory and social psychology, this book argues that extensive opportunities for direct participation in the political process engenders in citizens strong feelings of efficacy - a sense of control over the course of politics. Rhodes-Purdy uses a mixed-methods approach to test this theory, including qualitative case studies, analysis of survey data, and experimental methods. Features Summary Offers a new theory of regime support to explain why citizen support for regimes does not always match policy performance. 2015, Hard cover with dust cover, 274 pages. Very good condition as new. Under 1kg.   Numbering the Dead is a seminal account of the violent civil conflict that broke out around the city of Pietermaritzburg in 1987 and what ensued over the next three years. Aitchison and his colleagues, based at the Centre for Adult Education, documented and dissected the ebb and flow and the changing circumstances of this not-so-low intensity civil war in the region.  They collected, computerised, and categorised literally thousands of instances of eyewitness or documentary evidence, and then applied an innovative synthesis of qualitative and quantitative approaches that uncovered the patterns and intimated the underlying causes.  This book, mainly covering the period 1987 to 1989, presents a distillation of this monitoring work, conducted under unimaginably difficult and stressful conditions.
