Review Way back when the Game Boy first came out, long before Pokemon, Advance Wars and the rest, the formats killer app--the game which people would buy the console to play-- was Tetris. Polarium is clearly Nintendos attempt to offer a similar simple-but-addictive arcade puzzler for the DS, and although its nowhere near the classic that Tetris was, its still a fun little game. The basic gist is that you have to draw a continuous line on the touch screen to make a grid of blocks swap colour from either black or white. Like all the best puzzle games it sounds simple till you try it and although the idea of inverting the colour of the blocks so that a whole horizontal line disappears sounds easy it soon becomes apparent that it is anything but. The game can only be played with the stylus and at first it seems overly simple. You soon learn some basic strategies though, such as using the block-less border of the screen to take shortcuts, and the whole thing quickly becomes addictive. There are two basic single player modes, with Challenge constantly introducing new blocks at the top of the screen and Checkmate offering some more complex puzzles without a time limit. Theres also a multiplayer mode and even the chance to beam a ten puzzle version of the game to a friend for them to try out and practise on. It may not look like much but this is yet another high quality puzzler to add to the DSs already burgeoning ranks. -- David Jenkins

But here is the upside: these are Ridley Scott's Aliens-they are coming for you relentlessly. The game gives you the heebie-jeebies when you're playing it all alone with the lights turned down low. The tension can often become palpable as you reload your weapon, administer a health pack and pray that the beasts don't hit you from a direction you hadn't anticipated. The premise of the game is pretty standard Alien fare: you, as Ripley, are locked in a life or death outer-space struggle to keep the devious Dr Wren from bringing alien samples to earth. The atmosphere created by Alien: Resurrection 's various environments, animation and sounds is the primary reason to purchase this game. Because it relies heavily on suspense--the sense that these adversaries can be nowhere and everywhere at the same time has never been more real in a game-- Alien: Resurrection can sometimes go even beyond what you would consider merely scary to an entirely new terrorising experience. The game engine supports all this with atmospherics like lighting effects, fogging, water (and blood?) dripping and other particle effects. But suspense can only go so far. As in the movies, if the actual confrontations with the aliens don't live up to expectations, the whole game can suffer. -- Todd Mowatt
