Port Shepstone (KwaZulu Natal)
Glottiphyllum linguiforme 10 seeds The species are native to South Africa, specifically to Cape Province and the Karoo desert. They grow in rocks and soils incorporating slate, sandstone and quartz. Rainfall in their native areas is between 125 and 500 mm. They are characterized by soft, strap-like leaves and large yellow flowers. The plants are generally low-growing and form clumps of compact rosettes. Glotts are considered very easy to grow and are quite tolerant of growing conditions. Glottiphyllum plants can be grown in small pots in a lean soil with sand and clay. They require very sunny exposure, and need moderate watering in summer and not at all in winter (during which the plant undergoes a necessary rest period). Seed can be sown at most times of the year. Avoid very hot weather. Sow the seeds in a flat seed pan. Ensure that there is adequate provision for drainage in the bottom of the seed pan. If the seeds stand in too much water, they will more than likely rot. The best medium to sow the seeds in is a sandy loam mixture. On top of this mixture, sprinkle a thin layer of coarse river sand, 2 mm deep. It is into this sand that the seeds are sown. Seeds should be sown 2 mm below the soil surface. Do not sow the seeds too deep. If sown too deep, they will be smothered and probably not germinate. Under ideal conditions, seedlings will grow rapidly. Plant the seedlings out when they are 3–5 cm in height.

Echinopsis which is placed in the Cactaceae family, is a large genus of 128 species of cacti which grow naturally in the South American countries of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay. They grow in sandy or gravel soils on hillsides and in rocky crevices. They range in size from large tree like species, to small species such as Echinopsis chamaecereus, the peanut cactus.            Some common names include hedgehog cactus, sea-urchin cactus and Easter lily cactus. Due to the large number or species, and large number of variations, it has made classification of species in this genus very difficult. This has resulted in a large number of synonyms for Echinopsis, most of which used to be considered separate genera, but are now included in the genus Echinopsis. All these synonyms are still widely used by collectors and enthusiasbate and controversy as to the correct classification. The name comes from the Greek word echinos meaning 'spiny', 'hedgehog' or 'sea urchin', and opsis meaning 'likeness' or looks like. Echinopsis can be grown as pot plants and make interesting features on a sunny veranda. They also make an attractive addition to a rockery or water-wise garden.  Echinopsis spachiana, previously known as Trichocereus spachianus, is commonly known as Gold Torch or Golden San Pedro for its numerous short, golden spines. Its lime green body distinguishes it from many other popular Echinopsis varieties. Echinopsis spachiana is native to western Argentina and Bolivia and is easy to grow in pots. Starting in late spring, its huge, nocturnal, white blooms can expand up 15cm in diameter and are attractive to bats and moths. It is a rapid grower and enjoys moderate watering. Branching typically occurs at the base with stems reaching upwards of 2 meters with age. Its enthnobotanical value is comparable to Echinopsis peruviana and Echinopsis pachanoi though it contains less mescaline it also contains hordenine.
