Call of Duty 2: Big Red One should certainly be the last word on the current console formats though--which means something at least. Rather confusingly this has nothing to do with the subtitle-less Call of Duty 2 on PC and Xbox 360. Whereas that game has the usual mix of three different nationalities of soldier to control, Big Red One has you playing the same soldier throughout the whole game. You do get to do quite a bit of sight seeing though with missions in North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany. The Big Red One of the title is the nickname of a famous American infantry division and by sticking with them throughout the whole game you do get a much better sense of camaraderie than previous Call of Duty games. Unfortunately it also means that the game seems perilously close to the already excellent Brothers in Arms, except without the strategy bits. No war game ever seems to do its action quite like Call of Duty though and the set pieces here tread that difficult line between cinematic bombast and harrowing realism perfectly. By connecting a Game Boy Advance to your GameCube (link cable required) you can upload all your data from the portable games so that it appears on your GameCube and on the big screen. This means you can examine your Pokedex of over 200 Pokemon in full 3D, swap and trade items and Pokemon, view extensive tutorials, set out your hidden base, use e-cards and, most importantly, battle. Pokemon Colosseum features a range of battlegrounds, ranging from out in the middle of Petalburg Woods to within a giant stadium with thousands of onlookers. You choose to fight the battles either against the computer, a friend or in a team battle with four people, but whatever you decide suddenly your Pokemon and all their amazing moves will be in super realistic 3-D--they look even better than they do in the cartoon. Using either the GBA or the normal GameCube controller makes the battles really come alive as you fight for honour or one of the many unlockable secrets. Players can control a team of four and play as Shrek or any of his seven friends, switching between each to best utilise the character's unique abilities to solve puzzles, fight monsters and complete dangerous and thrilling adventures. Review Even the most ardent of Shrek fans would have to admit that so far the games based on the big green goofball havent quite been up to scratch. In fact theyve been completely rubbish. Shrek 2, based directly on the new movie, is a step back in the right direction. At its core the game is a sort of scrolling beat-'em-up, interspersed with numerous little puzzles to overcome as you try to navigate the various fairytale realms. What makes things a lot more interesting is that you actually manage a team of four characters at a time, taking control of one at a time and having the other three follow along behind. The defaults include Shrek, Fiona and Donkey, but you also get to use Gingerbread Man, Lil' Red, Puss in Boots and The Big Bad Wolf. The best bit is that if you can get three friends to help, then one person can actually control a character each, which really livens things up. But even in single player mode any of the characters can get a chance to take part in a "Hero Time" mini-game that provides a enjoyable respite from the main game as you take a ride on a dragon with Donkey or indulge in a singalong with Fiona. Although the graphics are impressive (much more so than the sound, which doesnt feature the original movie cast), the main gameplay can get a bit monotonous. But for Shrek fans and general young 'uns theres more to enjoy here than with most film licenses. -- David Jenkins

After only one sequel EA have decided to give the underground night racing theme a rest and let you drive in the sunlight for a change. Youre still a super-illegal street racer though and indeed much of the game revolves around you being pursued by the police in some very Blues Brothers-esque chases. Appearing to take a leaf out of Burnout s book, the game encourages you to make the most of traffic and roadside objects, in order to put off the long arm of the law or simply one of your fellow racers. The demo race so far seen features a lot of weaving in and out of traffic and some very cinematic touches such as zipping underneath a giant lorry carrying tree logs, which then spill out on the road behind you further aiding your escape. The graphics in the game have definitely received a boost from the last one and appear far more detailed and ambitious in scope than Underground. Unsurprisingly the ability to customise your car is still a large part of the appeal, although again theres a big distinction between extras that are just for show and performance tuning that actually has an effect on the way your car performs.
