About the product Number 206 of an edition limited to 510 copies, a facsimile reprint of the 1825 printing by W. Bridekirk. 8vo; original brown rexine gilt; pp. (vi) + 24. Regular browning throughout. Very good condition. (SABIB 4, p. 317 [1st and 2nd printings])"It is interesting, though not surprising, to find that in 1824, the year when, in spite of all the efforts of Pringle and Greig, Lord Charles Somerset succeeded in suppressing the free press in Cape Town, an attempt was made, sponsored by the same circle of independent-minded citizens, to found a South African Literary Society. Sixty-one citizens of distinction became members, and Thomas Pringle was appointed temporary secretary. It was essential to have the approval of the Governor, however, so Somerset was respectfully requested to become Patron of the Society. Ever suspicious of anything inaugurated by the'rebel'Pringle, Somerset began by refusing that honour, and proceeded to forbid the establishment of the Society, on the grounds that it'might have a tendency to produce political discussion'. The very rare contemporary documents dealing with this episode are now re-published after the lapse of 140 years. They are of great historical interest, particularly for the contrast they reveal between the alert-minded members who sought to pursue cultural activities, and the despotic and ultra-conservative Governor." Papers of the South African Literary Society, 1824 (Thomas (secretary) Pringle)

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Support for civil society has become a major concern for development agencies. However, there has been confusion about the role of non-governmental development organizations (NGOs) in civil society. Sometimes, the funding of NGOs has simply been re-phased as support for civil society. Yet NGOs form only one group of organizations within civil society. Often they are funded from external sources and lack local legitimacy and accountability. This book contains papers by practitioners and researchers that examine the role of NGOs in civil society. It includes general thematic papers on civil society, case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America and Eastern Europe, and papers that analyze initiatives undertaken by Northern NGOs and donors in democratization programmes in the South. The stimulus for this book was an INTRAC workshop to reflect on the implications of the new civil society policy agenda for NGOs, especially for countries undergoing major political transition. Features Summary Support for civil society has become a major concern for development agencies. However, there has been confusion about the role of non-governmental development organizations (NGOs) in civil society... Hardcover. ist Edition:Fighting Mac: the climb to disaster of Sir Hector Macdonald, KCB, DSO, 1853-1903 / [by] William Clive [i.e. R. Bassett]. Bassett, Ronald. Hardcover. English. Macmillan. 1977.. 305 pp.Unclipped. Very good condition in hardcover with good dw.. light foxing to outer papers.Inside clean clear & crisp. Experiences of Hector Macdonald, known as Fighting Mac, who rose from the ranks to Major General, in the British army during the period 1870-1903, covering India, Afghanistan, South Africa, Egypt and Sudan. Much on the Boer War. On a spring morning in 1903, Major-General Sir Hector Macdonald, one of Britain's greatest military heroes, took his life in a hotel room in Paris. A few days later he was buried hastily in an Edinburgh cemetary as his fellow countrymen tried to come to terms with the fact that one of Scotland's most famous soldiers had ended his life rather than face charges against his character. The suicide and its aftermath created a national scandal and one which still reverberates long after those dramatic events - it is now clear that the official files dealing with his case, the papers of the Judge Advocate have been destroyed. Macdonald or 'Fighting Mac' as he was known to an adoring public, was no ordinary soldier. A crofter's son who had risen from the ranks in the Victorian army, he covered himself with glory during a long and successful military career and in 1898 was widely acknowledged as the true hero of the Battle of Omdurman, which cemented British Imperial rule in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Everything lay at his feet - a knighthood, honours, the respect of fellow generals such as Roberts and Kitchener - but Macdonald's career came to a shocking full stop when he stood accused of homosexuality and was ordered to face a court martial. Unable to come to terms with the disgrace, he committed suicide. That should have been the end of his story but so powerful was the myth created by Fighting Mac that people refused to believe he was dead. Soon rumours were circulating that Macdonald had faked his death and had adopted the persona of a prominent Prussian officer, the future Field Marshal August con Mackensen, one of Germany's great leaders during the First World War. FIGHTING MAC tells the true story behind his disgrace and sheds new light on the myths
