SOS Men Against the Sea is a superbly dramatised chronicle of 29 ships the loss of which history, by and large, passed by.  Few have ever heard of the Cospatrick, a fully rigged ship destroyed by fire off the Cape of Good Hope in 1874 with the loss of 400 lives.  Or the steamer Utopia which skewered itself on the ram-bow of a warship in Gibraltar Bay and sank in five minutes, taking 500 souls with it.  A similar loss of life occurred when the Russian cruise liner Admiral Nakimov collided with a bulk carrier in the Black Sea in 1986.  There was no loss of life when the cruise liner Oceanis sank off the coast of the Transkei, thanks to the actions of a few non-seamen who displayed the true spirit of the Birkenhead. A total of 5683 lives were lost when these ships went down. This book is their epitaph.   Soft cover, fair condition.  The cover is creased in places.  The paper shows slight foxing but the spine is tight.  206 pages.

About the product 8vo; original green rexine, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. (viii) + 116, incl. index; plates; maps, incl. folding. Very good condition. Uncommon. The author attempts"to describe how, between 1871 and 1881, the Cape government on behalf of the British Government, performed the task of ruling the Basotho, who had become British subjects in March 1868. Several problems arose from this exercise in government by proxy. The attitude of the Basotho towards the Cape, for example, hinted at their dissatisfaction with the arrangement. From time to time their spokesmen said they would have preferred direct rule by England, and were a little unhappy to find themselves wards of the Cape Colony. The Cape's relations with the republic of the Orange Free State were in danger of becoming less cordial because of the treatment of the Basotho by the officials and/or ordinary citizens of that country, which sometimes elicited protests from the Cape authorities. Then there was always the question of the Cape's administration of the Africans within its borders, which could influence it to manage the affairs of Lesotho in a manner likely to be unpopular with the Basotho." J. M. Mohapeloa: Government by Proxy. Ten years of Cape Colony rule in Lesotho 1871-1881

Just how significant a part did the white hunter-traders settled at Port Natal play in their royal patron's downfall? Why were Shaka's relations with the British Cape Colony key to his survival? And why did the powerful army he had created acquiesce so tamely in the usurpation of the throne by Dingane, his half-brother and assassin? In his search for answers Laband turns to the Zulu voice heard through recorded oral testimony and praise-poems, and to the written accounts and reminiscences of the Port Natal trader-hunters and the despatches of Cape officials. In the course of probing and assessing this evidence the author vividly brings the early Zulu kingdom and its inhabitants to life. He throws light on this elusive character of and his own unpredictable intentions, while illuminating the fears and ambitions of those attempting to prosper and survive in his hazardous kingdom: a kingdom that nevertheless endured in all its essential characteristics, particularly militarily, until its destruction fifty one years later in 1879 by the British; and whose fate, legend has it, Shaka predicted with his dying breath.  Ghost Colonies (Lost and Found in History) - Ed Wright- 2009 - Paperback in nearly new condition. A litany of historical madness and disasters from the Vikings in Greenland and America to Friedrich Nietzsche’s Aryan supremacist sister in South America and finishing with the tragedy of Jim Jones and the Peoples’ Temple. The London Sunday Times wrote: “successful colonies are the stuff of schoolroom history: everyone knows about the Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth Rock and Captain Cook at Botany Bay. In this collection of 25 tales of colonies lost, burnt, abandoned or otherwise destroyed, Ed Wright proves that the murky history of colonial disaster is just as fascinating, and just as important.” The Brisbane Courier Mail wrote: “Ghost Colonies, written by established Pier 9 author Ed Wright, is the latest in a Lost and Found in History series to use the format, and is arguably the most interesting. From murderous Icelandic outcast Erik the Red’s Viking settlements in Greenland and his sons’ adventures in Arctic North America in 1000AD to the tragedy of Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978, this 320-page volume tells the story of 25 would-be utopias that failed to live up to the dream. They include a few of history’s better known colonial outpost failures, including the Scottish colony at Darien, Panama (1698-1700) and the failed utopian colonies of New Australia and Cosme in Paraguay at the end of the 19th century. For the most part, though, these are stories of more obscure colonial failures brought about by disease, ignorance, attacks by native people, political misfortune or other reasons. And Wright, who has researched his material thoroughly, tells them with a touch light enough to appeal to a wide readership. Australian readers will be interested in his detailed account of the rise and fall of the British colony at Victoria, Port Essington, on the north coast in what is now Arnhem Land. It fell prey to malaria and cyclones but not before explorer Ludwig Leichhardt stumbled into the settlement in late 1845 at the end of a 15-month overland journey from Moreton Bay that would make him famous. There’s mystery and tragedy in spades in this attractively designed book.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Praised in the New York Times Book Review for its "Herculean power of synthesis," George C. Herring's 2008 From Colony to Superpower has won wide acclaim from critics and readers alike. Years of Peril and Ambition: U.S. Foreign Relations, 1776-1921 is the first volume of a new split paperback edition of that masterwork, making this award-winning title accessible to those with a particular interest in the first half of the United States' history. This first volume of Herring's international narrative charts the rise of the United States from a loose grouping of British colonies huddled along the Atlantic coast of North America into an emerging world power at the end of World War I. It tells an epic story of restless settlers pushing against weak restraints; of explorers, sea captains, adventurers, merchants, and missionaries carrying American ways to new lands. It analyzes countless crises, some resulting in war and others resolved peacefully. Above all, it is the tale of United States' expansion, commercial and political, across the North American continent, into the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean regions, and, economically, worldwide. Herring brings this first segment of America's dramatic emergence as a superpower to a close with the United States' post-World War I rise to the status of the world's most powerful nation, poised-however unsteadily-for global engagement in what would be called the American Century. Years of Peril and Ambition highlights the ongoing impact of the nation's international affairs on the household names of U.S. history but also on ordinary citizens. Featuring a grand cast of characters, encompassing statesmen and presidents, diplomats and foreigners, and rogues and rascals alike, this fast-paced account illuminates the central importance of foreign relations to the existence and survival of the nation. Features Summary U.S. Foreign Relations through 1921 is the first part of From Colony to Superpower, an international narrative blends political, diplomatic, and military history with economic...
