It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days A compelling and beautifully written memoir about dark and shameful family secrets, and one young Scottish woman's pilgrimage to Australia to attempt to lay the past to rest. In 1837 Angus McMillan left the Scottish Highlands for the other side of the world. Cutting paths through the alien harshness of the Australian frontier, McMillan became a pioneer to be forever mythologised in the statues and landmarks that bore his name. He was also Cal Flyn's great-great-great-uncle. Inspired by this glimmer of an ancestral greatness, Flyn followed in his footsteps to Australia, where her investigations forced her to confront dark and horrifying family secrets. She discovered that McMillan and his peers were responsible for a series of assaults on indigenous peoples so ferocious that the sites would ever after be synonymous with bloodshed: Skull Creek, Boney Point, Slaughterhouse Gully. McMillan too had a new name: the Butcher of Gippsland. Driven to piece together his story and confront her own history, Flyn looks for answers: How could a man lauded for his generosity and integrity commit such terrible acts? How could a man who had witnessed the horror of Highlanders cleared from their lands then massacre and 'clear' indigenous people on the other side of the world? How can whole societies come to be overlooked and forgotten? Should today's generation atone for their ancestors' sins? Blending memoir, history and travel, 'Thicker Than Water' evokes the startlingly beautiful wilderness of the Highlands, the desolate bush of Victoria and the reverberations on one from the other. A tale of blood and bloodlines, it is a powerful, personal journey into dark family history, intergenerational grief and the inherited guilt that we all carry with us. Features Summary A compelling and beautifully written memoir about dark and shameful family secrets, and one young Scottish woman's pilgrimage to Australia to attempt to lay the past to rest. Today, political violence has become the scourge of our world and terrorism is routinely described as a uniquely modern evil. Yet however unprecedented in scope the new terrorist organizations might appear, Matthew Carr argues in this definitive history of terrorism that they are merely offshoots of a spectacular bombing in 1881: the assassination of Tsar Nicholas II by terrorists...or were they freedom fighters? Thus begins a narrative of extraordinary sweep that "Publishers Weekly" called "engrossing, unsettling" and the Boston Globe praised as "brave and wise" and "a book for the ages." In The Infernal Machine, Carr unearths the complex realities of terrorist violence and its indelible impact on nations as different as Italy, Argentina, France, Algeria, Ireland, Russia, Japan, and the United States. Spanning over a century of world history, "The Infernal Machine" reveals stunning similarities in societies' responses to terrorism despite profound political and cultural differences. Carr demonstrates again and again that the true impact of terrorism has been felt in the overreactions of government and the media to acts of political violence. This "encyclopedic and diagnostic...primer for our frightening times" ("Edmonton Journal") allows us to see our current predicament against a background of striking historical parallels. Features Summary With extraordinary narrative sweep, investigative journalist Carr unearths the complex realities of terrorist violence and the stunning similarities in societies' responses to terrorism despite profound political and cultural differences.. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days 'Not just timely but important too. Ed Husain does not just set out the fundamentals of Islam as a religion but explains how and why understanding it properly matter. This should be compulsory reading' Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk Roads A fascinating and revelatory exploration of the intricacies of Islam and the inner psyche of the Muslim world from the bestselling author of The Islamist `Islam began as a stranger,' said the Prophet Mohammed, `and one day, it will again return to being a stranger.' The gulf between Islam and the West is widening. A faith rich with strong values and traditions, observed by nearly two billion people across the world, is seen by the West as something to be feared rather than understood. Sensational headlines and hard-line policies spark enmity, while ignoring the feelings, narratives and perceptions that preoccupy Muslims today. Wise and authoritative, The House of Islam seeks to provide entry to the minds and hearts of Muslims the world over. It introduces us to the fairness, kindness and mercy of Mohammed; the aims of sharia law, through commentary on scripture, to provide an ethical basis to life; the beauty of Islamic art and the permeation of the divine in public spaces; and the tension between mysticism and literalism that still threatens the House of Islam. The decline of the Muslim world and the current crises of leadership mean that a glorious past, full of intellectual nobility and purpose, is now exploited by extremists and channelled into acts of terror. How can Muslims confront the issues that are destroying Islam from within, and what can the West do to help work towards that end? Ed Husain expertly and compassionately guides us through the nuances of Islam and its people, contending that the Muslim world need not be a stranger to the West, nor its enemy, but a peaceable ally. Unabridged value reproduction of THE PRINCE, by Niccolo Machiavelli and translated by N. H. Thomson for a Harvard series, is game theory from the year 1513. THE PRINCE is divided into 26 chapters covering all the steps of power, be it in the office or across continents. Topics include various forms of power (mixed, heredity), how power is acquired (with help, through criminal acts), and important aspects of power (bearing, flatters, secretaries). No student of influence should be without this historic philosophy book on leadership. Amazon.com Review When Lorenzo de' Medici seized control of the Florentine Republic in 1512, he summarily fired the Secretary to the Second Chancery of the Signoria and set in motion a fundamental change in the way we think about politics. The person who held the aforementioned office with the tongue-twisting title was none other than Niccol² Machiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 years of patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modern politicians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air political analyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what a book The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modern political thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena. "It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." With just a little imagination, readers can discern parallels between a 16th-century principality and a 20th-century presidency. --Tim Hogan --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition. Read more Review [Machiavelli] can still engage our attention with remarkable immediacy, and this cannot be explained solely by the appeal of his ironic observations on human behaviour. Perhaps the most important thing is the way he can compel us to reflect on our own priorities and the reasoning behind them; it is this intrusion into our own defenses that makes reading him an intriguing experience. As a scientific exponent of the political art Machiavelli may have had few followers; it is as a provocative rhetorician that he has had his real impact on history. from the Introduction by Dominic Baker-Smith --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days On 12 June 1922 King George V received at Windsor Castle representatives of the six disbanded Irish regiments. While five had long and distinguished service records, the South Irish Horse (SIH) had only been raised in 1902, as a result of the second Boer War, but too late to take part. On the outbreak of The Great War a single squadron of the SIH was sent to Flanders which was involved in the retreat from Mons and the Marne and the early battles of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle. The remainder of the Regiment followed and over the next four years, won ten battle honours including Loos 1915, Somme 1916 and 1918, Albert, St Quentin, Courtrai and finally France and Flanders 1915-1918. Losses were severe and there were many acts of gallantry. This book, while not an official history, fills a void by describing the achievements of this unique and short-lives regiment and the colourful characters who served in it. Certainly there is a fine story to tell and it will be invaluable to those researching former members. Features Summary First accessible history of this Irish based cavalry regiment. In the Heat of Shadows: South African Poetry, 1996-2013 In the Heat of Shadows: South African Poetry 1996-2013 presents the works of 32 poets and includes some translations from Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sesotho, and Xitsonga. This collection follows on from Denis Hirson's 1997 anthology The Lava of This Land: South African Poetry 1960-1996. Today, South African poetry is charged with restlessness, bursting with diversity. Gone is the intense inward focus required to deal with a situation of systematic oppression, the enclosing effort of concentration on a single predicament. While politics and identity continue to be central themes, South African poetry since the late 1990s reveals a richer investigation of ancestors and history, alongside more experimentation with language and translation, and enduring concern with the touchstones of love, loss, memory, and acts of witnessing. The poets include: Jim Pascual Agustin * Gabeba Baderoon * Robert Berold * Vonani Bila * Jeremy Cronin * Ingrid de Kok * Isobel Dixon * Finuala Dowling * Khadija Tracey Heeger * Denis Hirson * Ronelda Kamfer * Keorapetse Kgositsile * Katharine Kilalea * Rustum Kozain * Antjie Krog * David wa Maahlamela * Bongekile Joyce Mbanjwa * Joan Metelerkamp * Kobus Moolman * Isabella Motadinyane * Petra Muller * Gert Vlok Nel * Mxolisi Nyezwa * Karen Press * Mongane Wally Serote * Ari Sitas * Kelwyn Sole * Rosamund Stanford * Toni Stuart * Nathan Trantraal * Marlene van Niekerk * Bulelani Zantsi. [Subject: African Studies, Poetry] About the editor  Denis Hirson was editor of a previous anthology of poetry: The Lava of this Land, South African Poetry 1960-1996 (Northwestern University Press and David Philip, 1997), was co-editor [with Martin Trump] of The Heinemann Book of South African Short Stories (Heinemann, 1994), and the author of an historical survey of South African literature, Worlds in One Country (Jacana 2011). He has also edited two anthologies of South African poetry in French translation, and has done much to promote South African literature in Europe. Denis Hirson is the author of four books of memory: The House Next Door to Africa, I Remember King Kong (the Boxer), We Walk Straight So You Better Get Out the Way, White Scars, a poetry collection, Gardening in the Dark, and a novel, The Dancing and the Death in Lemon Street. MANKIND take an interest in the history of those who, like themselves, have encountered the trials and discharged the duties of life. Too often, however, publicity is given to the lives of men splendid in acts of mighty mischief, in whom the secret exercises of the heart would not bear a scrutiny. The memoirs are comparatively few of those engaged in the humble and useful walks of active benevolence, where the breathings of the soul would display a character much to be admired, and more to be imitated....
