This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days First published in 1909, the great American version of Flaubert's "Trois Contes" recounts the lives of three plain and humble women, two working as household servants and the third, a Black woman, involved in an unhappy love affair. But to express these revelatory fictions in this manner is to miss everything, for Stein's language of the first decade of the 20th century is still as fresh today as if her characters had just created the American tongue. Poet Lyn Hejinian adds new perceptions about this work in her stunning introduction. Also available by Gertrude Stein "History or Messages from History" PB $5.95, 1-55713-354-9 - CUSA Features Summary An astounding take on Flaubert by one of the great American novelists. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days TCG is proud to conclude the centennial year of Thornton Wilder's birth with the publication of Volume Two of his collected short plays. Thornton Wilder -- winner of three Pulitzer Prizes (one for fiction; two for drama) -- was not only one of America's greatest men-of-letters, but one of the most popular and most enjoyed. In addition to such highly regarded and popular novels as The Bridge of San Luis Rey and The Ides of March, he was one of our most successful playwrights. To this day, Our Town, The Matchmaker, and The Skin of Our Teeth remain among the best-loved and most-produced plays in the canon. To many contemporary playwrights, Wilder is -- together with Gertrude Stein, whom he championed -- the font of experimental drama in America. The diversity of form in his best-known works proves his mastery. Though his full-length works were few, he is widely perceived as one of this century's major American dramatists. Features Summary Volume Two of the collected short plays by one of the greatest American playwrights of the 20th century. Now available once more here is the author's long out-of-print first collection of one-acts... Author Thornton Wilder (Author), A. They were the Jazz Age.' - Independent When beautiful, reckless Southern belle Zelda Sayre meets F. Scott Fitzgerald at a country club dance in 1918, she is seventeen and he is a young army lieutenant. Before long, Zelda has fallen for him, even though Scott isn't wealthy or prominent or even a Southerner and keeps insisting, absurdly, that his writing will bring him both fortune and fame. When he sells his first novel, she optimistically boards a train to New York, to marry him and take the rest as it comes. What comes, here at the dawn of the Jazz Age, is unimagined success and celebrity that will make Scott and Zelda legends in their own time. Each place they go becomes a playground:New York City, Long Island, Hollywood, Paris, and the French Riviera - where they join the endless party of the glamorous, sometimes doomed Lost Generation that includes Ernest Hemingway, Sara and Gerald Murphy, and Gertrude Stein.Everything seems new and possible, but not even Jay Gatsby's parties go on forever. Who is Zelda, other than the wife of a famous - sometimes infamous - husband? With brilliant insight and imagination, Therese Anne Fowler brings us Zelda's irresistible story as she herself might have told it.
