Description For over a century, Japanese bonsai artists have used an organic fertilizer to provide the nutrients needed to keep their trees in perfect health year round. BonsaiBoost is locally produced from high quality, pure canola meal, the same ingredient still used in Japan today. BonsaiBoost should be used on any bonsai or potted plant, from collected stock through to exhibition trees and on flowering, fruiting or evergreen trees. Easy to use with no mixing required, BonsaiBoost sachets are laid on the surface around the bonsai and watered as normal. At each watering, a little of the nutrients in the sachet is carried to the roots. Sachets can be replaced every 2 months during the growing season. To use simply place the BonsaiBoost bag onto the soil and secure in place with wire or a toothpick. For shohin (small trees below 30cm) you should use about 1 bag. Medium sized trees can take 2 bags and larger trees as required. For maintenance of developed trees you will not need as much fertilizer as trees which are still being developed. Replace the bags roughly every 2 months. When you first start using them they will omit an odour. This odour diminishes with time till eventually no smell is experienced. The ground canola cake will become a solid lump, this is normal. While using BonsaiBoost little additional fertilizer is needed. For many years, Japanese bonsai professionals have been using exclusively these cakes to fertilize their trees. However for flowering plants you may want to use a fertilizer specifically aimed at promoting flowering. A seaweed extract may also be a good idea to use once in a while. BioBizz Bio-Grow is a liquid growth fertilizer which can be applied to most types of soil and substrate mixtures. The natural sugars and potassium in Bio Grow activates the bacterial flora in the substrate thanks to its basis of 100% Dutch organic sugar beet extract to guarantee an ample harvest with very sweet fruit. Available in 1L, 5L and 10L. How to use Bio Grow: Bio Grow is a complete fertilizer for the growing period.  Start with Bio Grow as soon as the first leaves appear and the plant has a height of 10 to 15cm.  Keep using Bio Grow till the end of the fruit production. BioBizz's advice is to add 1-4ml Bio Grow per litre of water.  You can use their feeding schedule to help guide you but a TDS/PPM/EC Meter will tell you the strength of your nutrient solution which is what you really need to know for each stage of your plants development.

The use of colanders initially gained momentum in Japan through their use by several Japanese bonsai professionals to radically accelerate the development of young pines. Their techniques became globally recognized after they were featured in several Bonsai Today magazines. The success of colander growing trees requires that a very open structured growing media be used to promote rapid root formation. However when the root tip reaches the edge of the colander it stops growing as there is insufficient moisture to sustain it. This results in the trunk issuing new roots. Ultimately the colander is filled with a network of dense, fibrous roots which promotes equally vigorous foliage development that rapidly leads to dramatic trunk thickening.
