The OFSTED report on school history suggests that the current generation of A Level students have been poorly served by exam-based textbooks which spoon-feed students while failing to enthuse them or develop deeper understanding of History. The Schools History Project has risen to this challenge with a new series for the next generation. Enquiring History is SHP's fresh approach to Advanced Level History that aims: - To motivate and engage readers - To help readers think and gain independence as learners- To encourage enquiry, and deeper understanding of periods and the people of the past- To engage with current scholarship - To prepare A Level students for university.Key features of each Student book:- Clear compelling narrative - books are designed to be read cover to cover- Structured enquiries - that explore the core content and issues of each period- 'Insights' (Feature panels between enquiries) provide context, overview, and extension - Full colour illustrations throughout. The Russian RevolutionThis title examines Russian history from 1894-1924 - the stories, settings, characters and issues that make this such an extraordinarily important and popular topic. The enquiries have an obvious focus on causes but also on interpretations. Each new generation of historians has interpreted these events through their own lenses - their own time, place and political standpoint - making this topic one of the most powerful for understanding how history is written and how interpretations are formed.Web-based support includes- lesson planning tools and guidance for teachers available from the SHP website http://www.schoolshistoryproject.org.uk/Publishing/BooksSHP/Enquiring/RusRev/EHSRusRev.html- eBooks for whole class teaching or individual student reading available from eBook retailersView sample chapter here http://www.hoddereducation.co.uk/SiteImages/51/51470c4a-7b8a-423e-85a3-ccd12c7c27ce.pdf Features Summary Think more deeply and work more independently at A level History through a carefully thought-out enquiry approach from SHP. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Definitions are often the first step toward granting or denying a person's rights. The Guide's aim is to provide precise meaning and content for terms such as "terrorism," "refugee," "genocide," and "intervention"-terms that the media have introduced into everyday conversation, yet whose legal and political meanings are often obscure. The Practical Guide to Humanitarian Law explains the terms, concepts, and rules of humanitarian law in accessible and reader-friendly alphabetical entries. Written from the perspective of victims and those who bring them assistance, the Guide outlines the dangers, spells out the law, and points the way toward dealing with violators and violations of the law. Entries in the Guide are complemented by detailed bibliographic references; addresses, phone numbers, and internet addresses of the organizations presented; a thematic index; and an up-to-date list of the status of ratification of the more than twenty international conventions and treaties concerning humanitarian law, human rights, refugees, and international criminal law. Published in cooperation with Doctors Without Borders/Medecins sans Frontiers. Format:Paperback Pages:672

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days How was the complex history of Britain's languages understood by twelfth-century authors? This book argues that the social, political and linguistic upheavals that occurred in the wake of the Norman Conquest intensified later interest in the historicity of languages. An atmosphere of enquiry fostered vernacular literature's prestige and led to a newfound sense of how ancient languages could be used to convey historical claims. The vernacular hence became an important site for the construction and memorialisation of dynastic, institutional and ethnic identities. This study demonstrates the breadth of interest in the linguistic past across different social groups and the striking variety of genre used to depict it, including romance, legal translation, history, poetry and hagiography. Through a series of detailed case studies, Sara Harris shows how specific works represent key aspects of the period's imaginative engagement with English, Brittonic, Latin and French language development. Features Summary This book shows how depictions of etymology were used by twelfth-century poets, translators, bureaucrats and historians to portray Britain's past.
