THE NATIONAL ARMY MUSEUM BOOK OF THE BOER WAR by Field Marshal Lord Carver Soft cover – 193x130 mm – Pan Books 2000 Edition 299 pages – index included – b/w photos – maps Near New cond – unread – no spine creasing – mild shelf wear “...in 2014 many countries in the world will seek to reflect upon the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. In two respects at least, the Anglo-Boer War may be seen as a precursor to that more extensive conflict in that many of the Allied leaders in 1914 had gained their experience in the fighting in South Africa; while the preparedness of the British and the Imperial Armies in 1914 had been crucially influenced by the lessons learned in the Anglo-Boer War.”

2003. Hard cover with dust cover. 294 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound, neat and clean. Under 1kg. Drawing on the archives of the National Army Museum, this book recreates the harsh reality of the Anglo-Zulu War - one of the most dramatic campaigns in British History. The Zulus were a fiercely independent and extremely brave warrior race. When the might of the British army was defeated by this indigenous foe at Isandlwana in 1879, it sent shock waves throughout the Empire - 1300 British troops and their African allies were killed. In the aftermath, Zulu reserves mounted a raid on a British border post at Rorke's Drift, which was held by just 145 men. After ten hours of ferocious fighting the Zulus were driven away. Eventually superior weaponry carried the day for the British, (though not before the exiled French prince, Louis Napoleon, was killed in skirmish). Invading Zululand, the British took the capital of Ulundi and 5000 British defeated 20,000 Zulus. King Cetewayo was captured and the war was over. Ian Knight draws on a host of previously unpublished letters and diaries, from ordinary soldiers to the British commander-in-chief, to bring this war to life - one which saw great acts of bravery an courage on both sides.

Over the past decade there have been many efforts to commemorate the history of the liberation movement. Other much-visited sites include the District Six Museum in Cape Town, Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, Freedom Park in Pretoria, and the Nelson Mandela Museum in the Eastern Cape.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. Binding: Quarter cream vellum. Pages: 24 pages of prelims and 450 pages of text, illustrations and appendices. Dimensions: Folio. 40.5 x 30.5 x 7 cm +++ Edited by T.D. Kendrick +++ In the s and s, the artistic director of the  Urs Graf Verlag  publishing house was the eminent thinker and scholar of antiquities, Titus Burckhardt. Under his direction, Urs Graf Verlag embarked on the publication of a series of facsimiles of ancient hand-made manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells and the Ilias Ambrosiana. These productions were of such high quality technically and intellectually that they were highly acclaimed by both experts and the wider public. All the Urs Graf facsimiles were limited editions much prized by collectors, but they were also acquired by museums and by the major libraries. The Lindisfarne Gospel Codex, created in the 8th century contains the four gospels of the New Testament Bible - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. It is a year old, hand-made illuminated manuscript, which is housed in the British Museum. The Urs Graf facsimile for sale here, is a complete reproduction of the original codex, bound in vellum with tipped-in colour plates. Only 680 copies were produced. When permission was granted by the British Museum for Urs Graf Verlag to go ahead with the production of the complete facsimile, a decision was also taken to organize a comprehensive study by a panel of experts to cover all aspects of the Lindisfarne Gospels. The accompanying commentary volume contains the results of the exhaustive study they conducted. The result is a triumph of classical scholarship.   1995. Large hard cover with dust cover. 200 pages. Very good condition; tightly bound, neat and clean. Book dealer's rubber stamp in front.  Over 1kg. POTGIETER, HERMAN; TEXT BY LINDEN BIRNS. MORE THAN A GAME: A SALUTE TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN AIR FORCE. "This book was published to coincide with the South African Air Forces' 75th anniversary. It traces the SAAF's development from the canvas-covered barnstormers of the 1920's to the computer-chip wonder-fighters of the 1990's. Through superb photography and an authoritative text, this book describes a trim, re-focussed SAAF in 1995. It also examines the post-Second World War expansion and subsequent shrinking of the SAAF's fleet, the establishment and closure of bases and the role of its squadrons. In addition, this book marks the high points in the parallel emergence of South Africa's defence aerospace industry and showcases the SAAF Museum's fine efforts in preserving large sections of the nation's under-rated aviation heritage. For the first time SAAF pilots publicly and frankly describe what it is like to fly various aircraft types. Their anecdotes augment many uncensored photographs, providing previously denied insights into what were recently regarded as top-secret and politically-sensitive pieces of military hardware.
