South Africa (All cities)
1978 printing.  Soft cover, 469 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. “One of the first histories to treat non-whites as active self conscious protagonists in twentieth-century South African affairs rather than as a dark acquiescent host before which the really important story of white South Africa unfolds.  The new edition has been corrected and eight new chapters extend the coverage to the end of 1963.  It is an important addition to the literature about South Africa.”— The Historian Eddie Roux, one of the early pioneers of radical non-racial activism in colonial South Africa has written this wonderful book which blends historical facts with empathy for his subject. He locates the struggle for freedom in South Africa within the broader context of the struggle for radical change. The early attempts at drawing a non-racial perspective, the internal battles of the Communist Party of South Africa as it was grappling with articulating a theory of class struggle appropriate to South Africa...The book is truly a tribute to the enduring spirit of the fight for freedom in South Africa.

Initially not selected for the 1906 tour, he was included at the last moment due to an injury to another player. He captained the 1912 Springboks on the second tour to Europe and was the first man to take a Springbok head on tour with the team! An outstanding boxer and walker, he did not allow a Boer War wound deter him from playing sport. Millar's book provides unbiased commentary on many of the games of the 1906/12 tours. Despite being severely wounded in World War I, he continued to serve rugby in SA in his later years.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days The South African War, popularly known as the Boer War, is memorable for many reasons. It was a final act to the great European scramble for colonies in Africa, and unique in that it saw the colonizing power making near-modern war on a group of white Africans. It was, however, not solely an affair between Boer and Briton. Indeed, one of the ironies of what was officially regarded as a "white man's war" is to be found in the numbers of black Africans who were also caught up in its violence, as both participants and victims. A century later we can more clearly see, recount and analyze events that have often been distorted or barely acknowledged.;This reference work starts with a chronology of South Africa from pre-colonial times to 1994, followed by a synopsis of the main events of the war. This serves as a convenient point of departure for exploring the more than 320 alphabetical entries that form the heart of the book.;These deal not only with the main personalities, places and events of the war but also with such general topics as the role of black people in the conflict, blockhouses, casualties, horses, infantry, medals, photography, railways, soldiers, spies, war artists, war correspondents, and weapons. A system of cross-referencing allows the reader easy access to related topics. There are four maps showing Southern Africa at the turn of the century, and an index to subjects which do not have separate entries. PRESIDENT PAUL KRUGER by JOHANNES MEINTJES a Biography.  South African history Meintjies describes his portrayal of Paul Kruger as: “(He) was one of the most extraordinary men ever produced by South Africa, and the story of his life proves it. He was a professionally lonely man and a dreamer of dreams, a devoted husband and parent, a giant in the physical and mental sense, and in the end just a weary old man with an invincible faith in the will of God, waiting for what was to be revealed in His own good time.” Historical black and white photos Passbook Club Edition 1974 FIRST EDITION. 295P.   Condition: Hard cover, dust jacket  excellent condition,  Packaging and Postage R48 (in S.A.)
