Bonsai pots tend to have large holes for drainage hence the need for mesh to keep the growing medium in place. The small holes in the mesh allow water to drain naturally holding the soil in place for good tree health. Description Ecklonia maxima (giant brown kelp) is sustainably collected off the Southern African coastline. It is then sundried. After drying it is milled to a 3mm particle size. What can it be used for? Milled seaweed is useful as a soil additive for: Moisture retention Slow release of nutrients to the bonsai roots How to use milled seaweed Add a small amount of milled seaweed to your bonsai soil mix. The ratio will depend on your desired results but typically a handful for a small bonsai pot and a large scoop for a large bonsai tree. What is it? Every few years, bonsai trees should be removed from their containers and the old growing medium replaced. As bonsai grow in very small containers with little growing medium, your choice of medium is important to ensure trees grow healthily for years. This General Soil Mix contains Mature Milled Pine Bark for adequate water retention. Coarse Crushed Silica Stone is added for drainage and to prevent compaction which may deprive the roots of life giving oxygen. Unlike fresh pine bark which some mixes contain, our mature bark will not consume Nitrogen, depriving the bonsai tree of growth. Good drainage reduces risk of root rot and ultimate demise of a tree. How to use? The mix is ready to be used right out of the bag in most cases. Should you require a drier, faster draining mix then add Leca. If you require more water retention then add more Peat Moss. What is it? Peat Moss is considered by some as the best organic growing medium for containerized plants known to mankind. Peat Moss is sterile, which is great when used in seedling mixes. However microbial life does thrive in it and it has the capacity to adsorb nutrients for future release. Despite its very light and open structure, it is water retentive but does not impede drainage in the root zone. How to use? Peat Moss may be used for indoor, balcony and container plants such as bonsai trees. Patented wetting agents within the Peat Moss, ensures quick absorption and distribution of irrigation water throughout the container. If using Peat Moss as an ingredient of a bonsai growing medium, ensure it is combined in a ratio of around 30/70 of Peat Moss to Leca for most trees. For species which prefer wetter roots or mature, highly developed bonsai where less vigorous growth is wanted, use higher ratios of Peat Moss for added moisture. What is it? Vermiculite is exfoliated hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate. Like Groperl, it is extremely absorbent and lightweight, and can absorb many times its own weight in water. Unlike Groperl, it does retain nutrients. This coarse Vermiculite is ideal for use as a growing medium component in container plant culture as it promotes drainage. Vermiculite can be combined with other components such as Peat Moss or Leca from our Bonsai range to produce a soilless growing media for bonsai artists. These growing mediums promote enhanced root growth aided by Vermiculites effect on aeration. Any applied fertilizer is absorbed and is slowly released as the bonsai requires them. How to use? Alone or mixed with Peat Moss, Vermiculite can be used to germinate seeds. As a growing medium component, it should constitute no more than 20% of the total mix or the other components must retain very little moisture, such as Leca from our Bonsai range. Description All bonsai pots have at least one drainage hole in the bottom to allow for water to escape from the pot and help prevent root rot. However leaving these holes uncovered will result in your bonsai tree soil escaping and creating a void under the tree. This needs to be prevented. This plastic drainage mesh is specifically for this purpose Features This drainage mesh has a specific aperture (gap between the plastic strands) to allow for finer particulates and water to drain freely but retains the bonsai soil you require for healthy growth of your tree. The aperture is also not so fine as to clog quickly, preventing drainage and very likely leading to the downfall of your tree. Furthermore the mesh has a rigidity which maintains the shape, it does not sag like other mesh which is sometimes used.

What is it? Natural stone to be used as a decorative feature together with bonsai trees or container grown succulents. Particle sizes and colors are carefully selected for bonsai artists to complete the illusion of wild growing trees in a landscape. How to use?
