Ficus is a pan-tropical genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes and hemiepiphytes in the family Moraceae. Ficus occupies a wide variety of ecological niches; most are evergreen, but some deciduous species are endemic to areas outside of the tropics and to higher elevations. Fig species are characterized by their unique inflorescence and distinctive pollination syndrome, which utilizes wasp species belonging to the Agaonidae family for pollination. The fruit of most species are edible though they are usually of only local economic importance or eaten as bushfood. However, they are extremely important food resources for wildlife. Figs are also of considerable cultural importance throughout the tropics, both as objects of worship and for their many practical uses.            Ficus salicifolia commonly known as the Wonderboom Fig, Wonderboom-vy, Narrow Leaf or Willow Leaf Fig has small, narrow leaves that produce excellent branch ramification. It is capable of producing good basal roots and excellent aerial root formation in humid conditions. It is an evergreen tree indigenous to South Africa with a provincial distribution that extends to Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West. It grows especially on outcrops, rocky hillsides and along cliffs fringing water courses and may rarely grow up to 10 m tall, and acquire a leafy spreading crown. It is named after the Wonderboom grove in Pretoria, that has spread from a central bole that was carbon dated to about a 1,000 years old. The Wonderboom is an extraordinary specimen for its size and structure, and its drooping branches are continuing to root and form new trees. It makes a very attractive bonsai.

Fig jam (or preserve) can also be made from the fruits. Local people claim that the fruits which form on the roots are the sweetest. The wood is used as a base by bushmen as part of the equipment necessary when igniting fire by friction. In modern times this tree is used most extensively as a shade tree. It makes a very attractive bonsai. It is believed to have magical powers and is used in many rituals by local people.

Pinus thunbergii  Bonsai Seeds Pinus is a genus of approximately 120 species of monoecious, evergreen, coniferous trees or shrubs, widely distributed throughout the world particularly occurring in mountainous and arid conditions where they are able to thrive. Pines are a classic bonsai species in Japan and the world over, they are not however, easy trees to care for and style without experience. Pines have their own growth patterns that differ greatly from deciduous and common coniferous species; these growth patterns need to be understood before successful styling and pruning can be carried out. As can be seen in the accompanying pictures; pines are not only used for bonsai in Japan, they are also very often seen cloud-pruned in Japanese gardens. Pinus thunbergii is a native of Japan and is arguably the classic bonsai pine species. The Black Pine is a very vigorous tree commonly grown Japan in parks and ornamental gardens where heights of anything up to 25metres are commonly reached. Black Pines are very tolerant of poor conditions, surviving in nature on barren, stony soils. Pinus thunbergii has thick, dark grey-green needles up to 7-15cm long, though quite long, the needle-size can be reduced in length with the use of bonsai pruning techniques. Bark is purplish-grey and becomes very craggy and fissured with age. White pines are frequently grafted onto the more vigorous Black pine, Pinus thunbergii, rootstock to improve vigour and growth-rate. The bid amount is for 1 Seed

Acer buergerianum  Bonsai Seeds Acer buergerianum, the Trident Maple, Three Pronged Maple or Chinese Maple is a vigorous species and is grown in many parts of the world as a 'Street' tree due to its tolerance of pruning, dry soil and air-pollution; these attributes also make it an excellent subject for bonsai treatment. Native to Korea, China and Japan, Trident Maples can reach heights of 10 metres or more when planted in open soil. The bark is buff and flakes to reveal a soft-orange underbark which gets darker as the tree matures. In South Africa, Trident Maples are difficult to locate. Not stocked in garden centres and tree nurseries, they are also unavailable to collect from the wild. Tridents nearly always have to be sourced from bonsai nurseries as imported stock or grown from seed. Maples are unrivalled for their autumn foliage colouring and variety of leaf shapes and textures. Maples are a very popular choice for the art of bonsai and many are compact enough for the average garden. Their flowers are green, yellow, orange or red and though individually small, the effect of an entire tree in flower can be striking in several species. Bark is another feature of some maples, although usually smooth grey or greenish, in the group known as the ‘snake bark maples’ it has longitudinal grey or red-brown stripes and in others it is flaky or papery. Most of the approximate 129 species come from East Asia, particularly China, where over 80 species can be found, Japan, with more than 20 species, and the eastern Himalayas. Most species are deciduous, but a few in southern Asia and the Mediterranean region are evergreen. Most maples prefer a cool, moist climate with ample rainfall in spring and summer. A planting position sheltered from strong winds suits them best. For best autumn colour, grow them in a neutral to acid soil. Propagation is generally from seed but grafting is also an option. Seed germination is aided by stratification. The bid amount is for 1 Seed
