Excerpt from Creighton: Biographical Sketches of Edward Creighton, John A. Creighton, Mary Lucretia Creighton, Sarah Emily Creighton Though the writer of this sketch has no other aim than to furnish a faithful chronicle of events concerning the Creighton family, he feels sure that he will be par doued if occasionally he allow a feeling of gratitude on behalf of the institution he represents to color his pages with a glow of eulogy somewhat foreign to sober history. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days More than thirty years ago, David Loftus's cherished identical twin, John, passed away. Ever since, a day hasn't passed without David feeling the loss. In 1987, after recovering from a brain tumour, John contracted meningitis and found himself back in hospital for treatment. David, as always, was by his side. They were opening their twenty-fourth birthday presents when a fatally miscalculated routine injection forced John into a coma. He died within two weeks. Over the past year, David has spent an hour every day remembering John and recording his story by hand. Diary of a Lone Twin is the product of that daily ritual - a powerful and deeply personal account that covers everything from enchanting and charmingly evoked childhood vignettes to the acute loneliness and raw pain that followed John's death. In sharing this beautifully written diary, award-winning and internationally acclaimed photographer David Loftus provides a rare insight for anyone who wishes to understand the bond between identical twins, and the unique bereavement of a lone twin that few people will ever experience. Features Summary A poignant and powerful memoir of one man's life after the death of his identical twin and a rare glimpse into the unique relationship that twins share.   Memoirs of the Extraordinary Military Career of John Shipp, Late a Lieutenant in His Majesty's 87th Regiment [3 Volume Set] Printed 1830. In very good antiquarian condition. R100 postage in SA. 332, 336 and 364 pages. Front board of volume 2 is loose.  John Shipp (March 1784 – 1834) was a British soldier and author best known for his memoirs, which were popular and ran to at least four editions. Shipp began his military career as a drummer boy at the age of ten and twice won commissions from the ranks due to his ability and conduct; he had to sell his first commission due to a lack of funds. He attained the rank of lieutenant in the 87th Regiment. The Times reviewed the third edition of Shipp's memoir in 1890 where the work was listed as one of the "Books Of The Week". The reviewer states that "for a man of little more than 30 to have twice won his commission from the ranks was...an achievement unique in the annals of the British army".

(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Now in paperback, "God Grew Tired of Us" is a book with passion, sadness, fear, perseverance, joy and humor written by John Dau, a member of the Dinka tribe of southern Sudan, who recounts his experiences as a refugee from the civil war that has been fought in his country since 1983 and resulted in the death of hundreds of thousands of Sudanese. Among the millions of refugees who sought refuge in neighboring countries were a group of about 20,000 children - most between the ages of 7 and 16, and many of them orphaned - who became separated from their families, and were forced to make their way, alone, across thousands of miles of treacherous landscape to a U.N. refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya. Along the way, more than half would succumb to starvation, disease, and attack.Dau, a 12 year-old when the war broke out, led 1,200 children on the flight from Sudan, 60 percent of them between 4 and 9 years old. Dau emigrated to the U.S. in 2001, and with humour and appreciation recounts the culture shock that resulted when traditional tribal culture collided with modern American society; the joy of reuniting with his family; and his tireless work giving back to the people of the Sudan. The award-winning film featuring his story was narrated by actress Nicole Kidman and won the 2006 Sundance Film Festival's "Grand Jury" and "Audience" awards. Format:Paperback Pages:304

1988 / Hardcover / Good condition “This infectiously readable memoir by the most colorful and controversial Navy Secretary in memory provides the inside story of the origins and battles at home and abroad in building a 600-ship Navy. Young, bright, and ambitious, John Lehman came to office refusing to be just another figurehead. For the six years he served in the Reagan administration, he helped forge an aggressive strategy for achieving maritime supremacy and for rebuilding the U.S. Navy. In this bestselling personal account of those years between 1981 and 1987, he speaks with candor and authority about the ills of the military establishment and the struggles and frustrations he encountered. Lehman reveals instances of political intrigue, including his dramatic Oval Office confrontation with Admiral Rickover at the time of the admiral's firing in 1982 and battles within the Pentagon and Congress. His explanation of the administration's new naval strategy has been called the most comprehensive and lucid ever written, and his descriptions of the Navy in combat over Libya, Lebanon, and Grenada are packed with fascinating details that only an insider could know. The bold insights he presents of a critical turning point in the Cold War will continue to inform and, with the addition of new material to this paperback edition, promise to renewed discussion of the role of the U.S. Navy then and into the future.”
