If it's worth making by Sir Richard Attenborough, it's usually well worth seeing – and this delightful love story, told almost as a mystery tale and spanning a period of more than fifty years – is no exception. At the funeral of a former WWII veteran in : while the man's daughter Marie (Neve Campbell) delivers the eulogy in church, her mother Ethel Ann (Shirley MacLaine) shows little interest in the proceedings, and is seen sitting outside, smoking, while nursing a hangover. Yet only her old friend Jack (Christopher Plummer) seems to understand why. It is only later, after a young Ulsterman (Martin McCann) in Belfast discovers a ring at the site of an American B-17 bomber that crashed there during the war, that the whole story starts to unfold!
