Africa through the Mist of Time - Brenda Sullivan - 2001 - Paperback in good, clean and tight condition. Sullivan is not afraid to look outside the thinking that attributes all rock engravings to the Bushmen. She investigates the existence of "The Strange Ones" based on the fact that the Bushmen married outside their clans and thus wandered the entire sub-Saharan Africa, mixing bloodlines, culture and traditions as they roamed. Controversial, but intriguing.

2001 first edition with 237 pages in good condition. R46 postage in SA. Who were "The Strange Ones"? In this fascinating study of heritage, Brenda Sullivan expands on her investigation of a "pre-San" race from her first book, "Spirit of the Rocks." She dismisses the theory that all rock art is the work of the Bushmen, based on her research that the San married outside their clans and thus roamed throughout sub-Saharan Africa for millennia. The San refer to rock engravings as the work of their ancestors. Brenda Sullivan launches into a compelling study of the San bloodlines based on evidence of their wanderings and the knowledge that Africa was circumnavigated for the second time as early as 470 BCE at the request of the Carthaginian king, Xerxes. She emphasizes the preservation of South African rock engravings. "In South Africa the emphasis on fertility, as evinced by the engraved symbols and figures recognizable as such by traditional healers and diviners, and the lack of rock engravings depicting scenes of violence or brutality, should awaken in a reader's mind the urgency of a universal need to respect Earth, our Mother - and to restore to harmony the things of this Earth, this Eden," says Sullivan

Africa The Time Has Come brings together 42 speeches by Thabo Mbeki, most of which were delivered after the elections of April 1994. These speeches reflect the remarkable consistency and logic in Mbeki's thoughts on issues such as socio-economic justice, the alleviation of poverty, the opening up of opportunities, the need for development, and the achievement of reconciliation through transformation - all of which are recurrent themes throughout his speeches. Coupled with Mbeki's vision for South Africa is his devotion to, and identification with the African continent, and his dream of an Africa Renaissance. Hardcover with dust jacket. Publisher: Tafelberg Publishers. 1998. 302 pages.

Africa's Third Liberation by Greg Mills and Jeffrey Herbst, 2014 (OUT of Print NEW)   Africa has experienced two liberations: the first from colonial and racist regimes, and the second from the autocrats who often followed foreign rule. African countries now have the potential to undertake a third liberation - from political economies characterised by graft, crony capitalism, rentseeking, elitism and social inequality. This third liberation will open up the economic space in which business can compete - a necessary condition for expanding employment. During the 2000s, the continent had its best growth decade on record since independence. High commodity prices offer a launch pad for sustained growth and employment creation. Now is the moment for African countries to act. This book asks how Africa's political leaders and interest groups can promote economic growth in their countries. Drawing on studies of countries outside Africa, Jeffrey Herbst and Greg Mills identify the factors separating the performers from the laggards worldwide. Aside from the need to create an enabling environment for business through good governance, provision of infrastructure, and improvements in education, most critical is the need for a laser-like development focus by governments. In Africa's Third Liberation, Jeffrey Herbst and Greg Mills show why a new African political debate is necessary to make progress in accelerating growth and creating jobs. Summary                                           Africa has experienced two liberations: the first from colonial and racist regimes, and the second from the autocrats who often followed foreign rule. Many writers have understood colonial rule as either "direct" (French) or "indirect" (British), with a third variant-apartheid-as exceptional. This benign terminology, Mamdani shows, masks the fact that these were actually variants of a despotism. While direct rule denied rights to subjects on racial grounds, indirect rule incorporated them into a "customary" mode of rule, with state-appointed Native Authorities defining custom. By tapping authoritarian possibilities in culture, and by giving culture an authoritarian bent, indirect rule (decentralized despotism) set the pace for Africa; the French followed suit by changing from direct to indirect administration, while apartheid emerged relatively later. Apartheid, Mamdani shows, was actually the generic form of the colonial state in Africa. Through case studies of rural (Uganda) and urban (South Africa) resistance movements, we learn how these institutional features fragment resistance and how states tend to play off reform in one sector against repression in the other. Reforming a power that institutionally enforces tension between town and country, and between ethnicities, is the key challenge for anyone interested in democratic reform in Africa. 2011. Soft cover, 362 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. Driven by remarkable passion, strong conviction, and a belief in his dreams, farmer-turned-taxi driver, Errol, has shown unrelenting commitment to his cause. This has been both his strength and at times his undoing. The reader is taken from Errol's humble beginnings on a farm in KwaZulu-Natal to his rise in popularity, and his fall into bankruptcy and divorce. He has not spared himself in telling the story of his early farming days and the errors he has made. It is also an exposé of his personal relationships - from losing his wife to the local doctor - and then himself having an intimate relationship with a doctor's wife. Errol has developed a unique perspective. He believes that the present government has failed its people through political top-heaviness and inefficiency. This view stems from his involvement with the most overlooked and poverty-stricken people of South Africa, and the state of deterioration that he sees around him daily. His solution to the problem: to follow the European example and divide South Africa into four self-governing countries. This division would be based on the respective and predominant cultures within those regions. Errol lets you see South Africa through the eyes of a man who has come to know her from the ground up".

With Both Hands Waving - a journey through Mozambique - Justin Fox - Kwela - 2002 - Paperback still in good, clean and tight condition. "Incorporating contemporary conflict and historical tradition in Mozambique, this travel memoir chronicles the experiences of a team of South African journalists who journeyed up the tropical coast of Southeast Africa and across the interior land of Mozambique in the early 1990s. The travelers observe architecture and devil worship, nature and war, snorkeling and cooking, and encounter aid workers, backpackers, bandits, and ordinary Mozambique citizens along the way. With humor and sharp observation, this account captures a pivotal moment in Mozambique's history after the bitter independence struggle and devastating civil war when the country, its people, and the narrator must redefine individual and national identities."
