Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, indigenous to South Africa. The name Strelitzia was given to honour Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III of England. She was from the house of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A common name of the genus is bird of paradise flower, because of a supposed resemblance of its flowers to the bird of paradise. In South Africa it is commonly known as a crane flower. The flowers are ideal for cut flowers and last up to 20 days in a vase. They can all be grown in large pots or tubs but will require regular feeding and irrigation. There are three tree-like Strelitzia species Strelitzia alba, Strelitzia caudata and Strelitzia nicolai. The other two species Strelitzia reginae and Strelitzia juncea are shrub-like tufted clump-forming species. In Kirstenbosch released a yellow variety of Strelitzia reginae which in was named Mandela’s Gold in honour of Nelson Mandela. Strelitzias are easy plants to grow in the garden. Plants do well in full sun to semi-shade, love a rich loamy soil and plenty of water throughout the year. They respond well to regular feeding with a slow release fertilizer and compost. They are however very tolerant plants and will thrive in most soils and can survive with very little water once established. The plants are also wind resistant and grow well in coastal gardens. Strelitzias are sensitive to cold and would need a sheltered position in areas with frost as the flowers and leaves are often damaged by frost. In very cold climates it is better to grow them in pots that could be moved indoors when freezing temperatures are expected. Strelitzia nicolai, commonly known as the Natal wild banana, White Bird of Paradise, Wild Banana or Giant Bird of Paradise, are evergreen banana-like plants, related to the well-known crane flower, Strelitzia reginae, that have erect woody, palm like stems reaching a height of 12 m and the clumps formed can spread as far as 4 m. The 1.8 m long leaves are grey-green and arranged like a fan at the top of the stems. Although not related to the true bananas or the wild banana Ensete ventricosum, the leaves and growth habit of Strelitzia nicolai are somewhat similar and probably account for the common name. The inflorescence is composed of a dark blue bract, white sepals and a bluish-purple "tongue". The entire flower can be as much as 18 cm high by 45 cm long and is typically held just above the point where the leaf fan emerges from the stem.

Eagle Owl (bubo africanus) If there are no owls in your neighborhood, it may be because the habitat is unsuitable, or because there are no usable nest sites for them. They don’t build a nest, but use a suitable site. Position of Nesting Box: • 4 - 6 m above the ground, avoid direct sun. • Position box out of any prevailing wind. • Have a clear flight-path into the box. • Be in a quiet area. • Do not attempt to lure owls to the box with food, this will only encourage other animals and deter the owl. Nothing rusts on this box, as rust causes wood-rot. The wood has been treated with the best marine grade wood preserve available. The box design has been approved by Radical Raptors, Bird of Prey Rehabilitation & Awareness Centre. Eagle owls are predators of pest species, such as rats. Since they also eat insects, they keep the numbers of other potential pests in check too. Fewer owls mean more rats. The eagle owl is the most common South African owl. A distinguishing feature is the long and prominent ear tufts, but these are purely for show, as they have nothing to do with the actual ears. Their wingspan is about 1 meter. Generally the male call with two hoots: "Hooo hooopoooo" and the female answers with three. The fact that owls like to perch on telephone and electricity poles along the main roads is the cause of many casualties among them. At night when cars flatten insects, rodents and lizards on the road, the owls will come down onto the road surface to feed on the prey remains and are subsequently hit by passing vehicles. There are many legends and myths surrounding these birds and they are feared by many cultures. Historically it was believed that if an eagle owl roosted on your roof at night, it would surely mean a death in the family. This has given rise to unfounded superstitions, which threaten their existence in the wild. Already owls are increasingly forced to enter urban areas in search of food. Owls play a vital role in our ecosystem and it is important to safeguard them before there is a knock-on effect that will have serious environmental implications. If you ever see one bob its head up and down or from side-to-side while looking at you, it is trying to get a clearer, three dimensional picture of you. It is also interesting to note that owls’ eyes don’t reflect in torch light. References and further reading: • Ginn, P.S., McIlleron, W.G. & Milstein, P. Le S. Compilers, .   The tiny Chile peppers of C. a. var. glabriusculum are red to orange-red, ellipsoidal, and about 0.8 cm (0.31 in) in diameter. Tepin is derived from a Nahuatl word meaning "flea". Tepin peppers, or "birds eye" or simply "bird" peppers (due to their consumption and spread by wild birds), are extremely hot, measuring between 50,000 and 100,000 Scoville Units. In Mexico, the heat of the Chiltepin is called arrebatado ("rapid" or "violent"), because, while the heat is intense, it is not very enduring. This stands in contrast to the Chili Piquin, which is somewhat similar in size and shape to the Chiltepin, but delivers a decidedly different experience. Piquins are not as hot as Chiltepins (only about 30,000-50,000 Scoville Units), but they have a much slower and longer-lasting effect.50 000 to 100 000 Scoville Heat Units.   Please familiarise yourself with the shipping info below Shipping Rates are as listed below Approximate processing and transit times are listed below PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT SHIP OUTSIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA
