Mendez grew up during a time when most schools were segregated. In the case of California, Hispanics were not allowed to attend schools that were designated for "Whites" only and were sent to so-called "Mexican schools." Although an American citizen who spoke perfect English, Mendez was denied enrollment to a "Whites" only school, an event which prompted her parents to take action, organise various sectors of the Hispanic community and file a lawsuit in the local federal court. The success of their actions would eventually bring an end to the era of segregated education. Most are unknown, although some - Sylvia's garden at Newby Hall, and the summer garden at Thurly Harcourt in France - are open to visitors; yet all retain their intimate atmosphere. Secret gardens abound in literature. Their aura of mystery and inaccessibility makes them irresistible, and when the key is finally found, magic still surrounds them. Real secret gardens have all these elements of surprise and unattainability, a sense of being hidden from prying eyes, known only to the chosen few, difficult to penetrate.;Each of the gardens revealed here is described in detail by its owner and we learn how each was created and why. They range from a Portuguese camellia garden to a minute New York roof-garden, from an English country stream-side garden to one stretching either side of a railway track. Taken together they show that all gardeners can have somewhere secret, however small within their own garden or house.

Ted Hughes: The Life of a Poetby Elaine Feinstein Soft cover in good condition. 2001 Synopsis: Ted Hughes is one of the greatest English poets of this century, yet his life was dogged by tragedy and controversy. His marriage to the American poet Sylvia Plath marked his whole life and he never entirely recovered from her suicide in 1963, though he chose to remain silent on the subject for more than 30 years. Many people, including his friend Al Alvarez, have held Hughes's adultery responsible for Plath's death. Elaine Feinstein first met Hughes in 1969, and she was a good friend of his and his sister Olwen's, both of whom guarded the Plath estate. She knows many of the European and America poets who so influenced Hughes - Seamus Heaney, Thom Gunn, Miroslav Holub, and knows the world in which both he and Plath moved. About the Author: Elaine Feinstein is a prize-winning poet, novelist and biographer. She was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1980 and her work has been translated into many languages. She is the author of highly praised lives of Pushkin and Ted Hughes (the first biography).

Since 1992, with the presentation of an excerpt from Walt Whitman's "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry," the Poetry in Motion program-co-sponsored by MTA Arts & Design and the Poetry Society of America-has brought more than 200 poems, in whole or in part, before the eyes of millions of subway and bus riders, offering a moment of timelessness in the busy day. The poems are by an eclectic mix of writers, from Sappho and Sylvia Plath to W. H. Auden, Rita Dove, Seamus Heaney, Nikki Giovanni, Patrick Phillips, and Aracelis Girmay. Each of the 100 poems gathered here has, in sixteen lines or less, the power to enliven the quotidian, provide nourishment for the soul, and enchant even the youngest among us. Book in excellent condition - Short gift message signed by Klatzow on the title page - SYLVIA WALKER did the writing as told by DAVID KLATZOW.  >>>  For a very long period of time, Dr. David Klatzow was the only independent forensic investigator in South Africa. During the apartheid years, a time of police brutality and state cover-ups, he was the man human rights lawyers called when they needed independent forensic evidence to uncover the truth. Although some cases are still unsolved, for him a case is never closed. The truth is out there, and he will find it.   Klatzow's investigations into countless notorious cases, such as the Guguletu Seven, the Trojan Horse, the murders of human rights lawyer Bheki Mlangeni and activist Dr. David Webster, and the bombing of Khotso House and Cosatu House, made him a controversial public figure. Hampered by the apartheid police and the legal system, he was always fearless and earned a reputation of being an 'ANC supporter', even though he always remained impartial. On a non-political level, he was instrumental in changing the testing mechanism for drunk driving in the 1980s and became an expert in fire investigations.  One of his most enduring interests is uncovering the truth behind the Helderberg airplane crash. Through a detailed analysis of the findings of the Margo Commission of Inquiry and having sifted through all available evidence, he is convinced that the official version of the story is far from the truth. More recently, Klatzow investigated the Paarl Press fire, the assassination of Brett Kebble and the murder of Inge Lotz. Fascinating reading for anyone interested in crime and current affairs; puts into perspective much of the information one hears about in the news.   *N.B.*   If you buy more books from me you only pay R 6 postage each on the additional books – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.
