This is the thoroughly researched account of the life and times of a South African WW2 pilot, the author's father, Ted. It is highly personal, drawing on family history and changing lifestyles as the central figure fights his way through a series of experiences, flying coastal strike missions in the Mediterranean and North Africa, then in the Far East against the Japanese.  The story gets off to an engrossing operational start before tracking back to the personal family story to provide a context. Images of a lost world haunt pages that relate to an era in which a decisive individual could challenge the system and get results.  As the story of Coastal Command is often overlooked, the exploits recorded here serve as an overdue reminder of the unit and the part it played in the Allied effort.  Ted's wartime exploits include the first mid-air skyjacking in history; the daring solitary attack on the Italian fleet after he had lost the rest of his strike team; narrowly surviving being burned in a horrific air crash in the Ceylon jungle; many emergency crash-landings; and finally as commander of 27 Squadron carrying out dangerous rescue operations behind enemy lines for members of the Indian Resistance Movement operating in the Burmese jungle. These exploits, written largely in the voice of Ted Strever, and extensively illustrated with photographs, come vividly to life. Hardback, 228 pages. Published August 2014

Title: Eagle Strike Author: Col Jan Breytenbach Soft Cover The story of the controversial airborne strike on Cassinga Angola in 1978 An extract from the preface I have written this book, reluctantly, not just to put the record straight, but to serve as a counter point to so many other books written by a body of biased commentators who where not there. Included amongst these are so many so called military experts and military historians, who also were not there but who did not even have the integrity to consult with me in depth, the one who actually commanded, at the sharp end, this controversial parachute assault.

Had nuclear conflict broken out, the region would have found itself as the target of a Soviet strike for the simple reason that it housed the launch pad for not only the British deterrent, but also America's first line of defence. The book also examines the early development of the UK's nuclear arsenal, with ballistic and environmental testing of nuclear bombs at Orford Ness and storage and maintenance at one of the country's most secret sites, Barnham. Cold War: East Anglia reveals the secrets of the years of confrontation, and looks at what life might have been like had the Cold War turned 'hot'. Subtitle: The Conspiracy to Stop the '94 Election Author: Peter Harris With Author's Inscription Publisher: Struik () ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 320 Dimensions: 22.2 x 14.9 x 2.5 cm +++ by Peter Harris (With Author's Inscription) +++ The country was ablaze. There were bomb blasts, massacres, assasinations. The right wing wanted a Volkstaat; Inkatha wanted secession for KwaZulu and was prepared to fight for it. It was a time fraught with danger. Peter Harris saw it all from the inside. In January he was seconded to the newly formed Independent Electoral Commission with South Africa's first democratic election only three months away. This story - enthralling, moving, thrilling - reveals the forces at work behind the scenes: those intent on destruction, those committed to delivering an election against the odds, and a conspiracy to strike at the heart of the election.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Bookdealers is well-known for its collectable and used books. We also have a large variety of remaindered books sourced from around the world.  If you collect from one of our five branches there is no delivery charge. We also offer postal delivery (when available) and courier delivery, subject to a quote.

Chibaya Moyo: The Rhodesian African Rifles - An Anthology, 1939-1981 (Andy Telfer & Russell Fulton) Chibaya Moyo, Strike to the Heart in Shona, is an anthology of stories and anecdotes from those who served with the Masodja, the all-volunteer black soldiers of the Rhodesian African Rifles, a proud African regiment that fought with distinction in two world wars, the Malayan Emergency and the Rhodesian bush war.  Chibaya Moyo brings together so many voices with tales of such vastly differing topics that it is by turn fascinating, tragic, humorous, intense, sad and inspirational; above all though it is honest.  It is the story of a brotherhood that transcended race and tribe and is a lasting memory and testament to a fine regiment, its soldiers and their actions. Chibaya Moyo is wholly dedicated to raising funds to assist those Masodja who still live in Zimbabwe and struggle daily to eke out an existence.  Paperback / 540 pages Illustrated
