In between touring and writing for Nightwish, Tuomas Holopainen hasn’t been taking things easy. Instead he’s been working on his solo album “Music Inspired by The Life And Times Of Scrooge”. The whole album, written and produced by Tuomas Holopainen, is based on a graphic novel called »The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck«, written and illustrated by Don Rosa. The title of the album gives a clue that this isn’t a typical album - the words “Music Inspired by” are accurate as this album is largely instrumental, with some songs being purely instrumental, some having full vocals and some using choral parts as well as the music. The whole album really does feel like a soundtrack rather than a typical album. Pip Williams, who worked with Tuomas on the “Imaginaerum - The score” album (the soundtrack to the movie Imaginaerum) has again worked with him on this album for the orchestrations. As with the recent Nightwish albums, Troy Donockley is also involved adding his pipes to the sound. There are a number of guest musicians, including the London Orchestra, The Metro Voices (a choir from London) and four lead vocalists: Alan Reid, Johanna Kurkela, Johanna Iivanainen & Tony Kakko. Brief comments on a few tracks: The album opens with “Glasgow ″, featuring a spoken narration at the start with Troy Donockley’s Uillean pipes giving a Celtic flavour. This gives way to some female vocals. The beautiful orchestrations will feel familiar to Nightwish fans as will the use of Troy’s pipes. The track ends with a piano section. “Into the west” opens with some soft female vocals. There’s a section that reminds of “Journey of the Sorceror” by The Eagles, better known to many people as the theme music for “The Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy” - it’s that same guitar sound and for a short period the tune is also reminiscent of it. Elsewhere the track features piano, a choir and an orchestra - there’s a lot going on during this track but everything works perfectly together. “Duels and cloudscapes” is an instrumental track and starts strongly with the orchestra performing some lovely symphonic music with lots of power, but then part way through the whole feel changes, things slow down, the orchestra fades out and its percussion and horns that take over with some soft choral vocals in the background. It has quite a quirky feel and you can certainly imagine it accompanying a funny part of the story. After a while the orchestra comes back in and the song returns to it’s powerful symphonic beginning. “The last sled” reminds one of Enya, but with more of a symphonic element giving it a more powerful feel. The penultimate track on the album is the one that was released as the first single, “A lifetime of adventure”. It’s a beautiful track and is one of the tracks with vocals all the way through. The final track is “Go slowly now, sands of time”, and is a track that features male lead vocals, female backing vocals, Uilleann pipes and a number of other instruments. It’s got quite a slow pace and has a folk music feel to it. There is another track on the album, a bonus track which is an alternate version on “A lifetime of adventure”. This really is a fantastic album with a real movie soundtrack feel to it. Beautiful orchestrations, lovely vocals and great tunes, all tied together with a single concept. It’s definitely not another Nightwish album, but Nightwish fans who enjoyed the Imaginaerum score are going to love this album as it’s got a similar feel with it’s largely instrumental sound. Tuomas Holopainen has done it again – a superb album. The climate is temperate, with two rainy seasons and two dry seasons every year. The population is young and predominantly rural, with a density among the highest in Africa. Christianity is the largest religion in the country, and the principal language is Kinyarwanda, spoken by most Rwandans. Rwanda follows a presidential system of government. The incumbent President is Paul Kagame of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). The government receives electoral support from across the community, and corruption levels are low relative to other Sub-Saharan African countries, although human rights organisations allege suppression of opposition groups. Hunter gatherers settled the territory in the stone and iron ages, followed later by Bantu settlers. The population coalesced, first into clans and then into kingdoms. The Kingdom of Rwanda dominated from the mid-eighteenth century, with the Tutsi Kings conquering others militarily, centralising power, and later enacting anti-Hutu policies. Germany colonised Rwanda in 1884, followed by Belgium, which invaded in 1916 during World War I. Both European nations ruled through the Kings and perpetuated pro-Tutsi policy. The Hutu population revolted in 1959, establishing an independent Hutu state in 1962. The Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) launched a civil war in 1990, which was followed by the 1994 Genocide, in which Hutu extremists killed an estimated 500,000 to 1 million Tutsi and moderate Hutu. The RPF ended the genocide with a military victory. Rwanda's economy suffered heavily during the 1994 Genocide, but has since strengthened. The economy is based mostly on subsistence agriculture. Coffee and tea are the major cash crops for export. Tourism is a fast-growing sector and is now the country's leading foreign exchange earner, the most popular activity being the tracking of mountain gorillas. Music and dance are an integral part of Rwandan culture, particularly drums and the highly-choreographed Intore dance. A wide-eyed South African conscript relates his small share of the war in Angola and Namibia in the 1980s. This is not the usual military history, written by a commander armed with facts, nor a researched story of a war or campaign.  It is a personal experience. Being brutally honest it will resonate not only with readers of all things military but also with a wider literary audience, for its poetic prose and subtle sentiments, and for its entertaining narrative. It may thus be of interest not only to the South African men who were there, but to their women who were left behind, and to all men and women anywhere. It is a book by a non-warrior dumped into a war, which nevertheless provides vivid alternative first-hand accounts whose validity cannot simply be brushed aside by professional historians. Descriptive writing takes readers right into the colourful past, into action and into personal interactions. Notes made at the time preserve intimate details of what it was like to be a White South African during Apartheid, and the surprisingly humane culture within its small but effective White-led Army. Dialogue is remembered verbatim as is the unique jargon and profanity of the time, with English translations where Afrikaans is spoken. After a brief life background the narrative moves chronologically through two years of military training, deployment, combat and demobilisation, with comments on the human effect of these experiences. The result is a compelling time capsule: the South African Defence Force ceased to exist in 1994 when South Africa began its non-racial democracy. Surprisingly, because it was a humane army it was a good one. This is not just a liberal attitude. It meant that when a thing needed doing, it was done conscientiously and thoroughly, with thought for secondary effects. It was a dangerous opponent to have, inflicting maximum casualties where this was necessary, but when the need passed, it switched easily to a humanitarian purpose. It is not so much a history of the siege as a story of the siege written while the events were fresh in the mind. In a calm retrospective view much might be added, much omitted, but the complete military history of Ladysmith may be left to the historian and the expert. Without being consciously in error, I have sought to give the reader some idea of the moods and colour of the time. In the multiplicity of names there may be some confusion; thus I have spoken of the fight at Rietfontein as Tinta Inyoni, and of Wagon Hill as Caesar's Hill, since local opinion always differed as to which was correct. With a full appreciation of the patriotism and pride of race which has made Australasia a fighting unit in the British Empire, I dedicate this book to my fellow-countrymen who took part in the South African Campaign.
