1992 1st Edition 303pp Hardcover with B&W photos Book Very Good, DJ Very Good some very minor shelfwear, contents very clean and crisp, tightly bound. Large heavy book, extra postage required: R55.00 An account of Black American soldiers in World War II who combated racism in the segregated military and on the home front. In April 1945, some Black American soldiers were among the first 'liberators' to enter Nazi death camps, encountering the survivors described by one GI as "walking skeletons." Companion volume to an upcoming PBS special, this work recounts the tragic saga of the 761st Tank Battalion, whose African American personnel trained for two years in the racist backwaters of the South, made a major contribution to Gen. George Patton's Third Army in the WW II European campaigns, then returned to the U.S. after the war to find that discrimination against them had grown worse. The 761st's military record is impressive. The battalion fought farther east than any other U.S. unit (but was prevented from making the historic link-up with the Red Army, a ceremony reserved for white troops), and led the way for U.S. forces in the liberation of Jewish survivors at Dachau and Buchenwald. In the saddest irony of all, the authors (all New York City film producers) describe how the African Americans received a warm welcome in England and from German civilians during occupation duty, and as a result were roundly resented by their white comrades in arms. Photos.

The Magic Army -Lesley Thomas. In the spring and early summer of 1944 a huge force, a million and a half strong, spread across Southern England, awaiting the greatest adventure in military history. The invasion of Occupied Europe. This army, mainly Americans, British and Canadians, most of whom had no experience of battle, was to be transported across the English Channel. No one knew how. This is the story of the American "occupation" of a wide district of South Devon to permit realistic war games. Its characters range from the Generals Eisenhower and Montgomery to the village simpleton. The Magic Army is an impressively moving, often very funny novel, which recreates the astonishing operation which preceded the Allied landing in France.   Publisher: 1982 Binding: Hardcover / Dust cover, Number of pages: 445 Condition: Good,AS NEW                                                             I have more books in This Category   I have many books on sale, please check my listings. 2014 paperback with 163 pages brand new. R50 postage in SA. I also do an affordable courier.....ask me!   Ops Askari was a large-scale, cross-border, mechanised operation launched by the South African Defence Force in November 1983. As is the nature with an assault like this, the constituent parts of Ops Askari was a complex blend of fighting men and support personnel from different Defence Force corps and combat disciplines. This account does not strive to recount the exploits of all these different elements in all their various facets. The focus is a rather narrow one. It is the story of five disparate, yet very similar, groups of young men who took part in this great raid into enemy territory against a superior force holding most of the battlefield aces. These five groups feature in this story for one reason: they all took part in the two attacks on a rickety little town in Angola called Cuvelai, on the 31st of December 1983 and again on the 3rd and 4th of January 1984. They only formed part of a much larger effort. The entire force is the subject of a number of books, but in this account the focus is on the five groups which I call the Spine of Delta. The first of these groups was a company of National Servicemen, known as Alpha Company (A Coy,) hailing from 1 South African Infantry Battalion (1 SAI Bn) in Bloemfontein, 1983. I was their captain, and it was my privilege to be their company commander from March 1983 right through the training phases and for the duration of Ops Askari. Then there was Delta Company (D Coy,) also NSM from 1 SAI. They formed part of 61 Mechanized Battalion Group (61 Mech Bn Gp) during Ops Askari. Also from the 1983 intake in 1 SAI was an 81 mm mortar platoon from the units Support Company, a young squad who fought courageously as part of The Spine during the hectic final five-day struggle for the occupation of Cuvelai.  The fourth element was also trained at 1 SAI Bn but during operations it did not deploy as a group. These men were Ratel drivers allocated where they were needed. They were fondly referred to as Digue's Platoon, named after their indefatigable platoon sergeant, Pierre Digue. This platoon participated as drivers for The Spine. These four bands of comrades shared their military roots, all being trained at 1 SAI in 1983. There was, however, a fifth and quite different group. They were'nt national servicemen at all, but students from four University Military Units; from University of Pretoria, University of the Free State, University of Stellenbosch and Rand Afrikaans University. They had already completed their two years' commitment as NSM and were civilians once more. During the university recess they had the option to volunteer for deployment as individuals or as a group from various Citizen Force (CF) Regiments. This book is mainly a compilation of their stories; of the reminiscences of those young national servicemen from Alpha and Delta Companies, 1 SAI; the 81-mm Mortar Platoon from 1 SAI by way of 4 SAI, Middelburg; Digues Platoon, officially the Chief of the Army's Platoon of drivers, and the valiant students from Tuks, Kovsies, Maties and RAU. With 63 black and white photos from the operation and the authentic war journal by Ian Scott from the University of Pretoria Military Unit.

1997 paperback with 230 pages in very good condition. R50 postage in SA. Into the Teeth of the Tiger provides a vivid, pilot’s-eye view of one of the most extended projections of American air power in World War II Asia. Lopez chronicles every aspect of fighter combat in that theater: harrowing aerial battles, interludes of boredom and inactivity, instances of courage and cowardice. Describing different pilots’ roles in each type of mission, the operation of the P-40, and the use of various weapons, he tells how he and his fellow pilots faced not only constant danger but also the munitions shortages, poor food, and rat-infested barracks of a remote sector of the war. The author also offers keen observations of wartime China, from the brutalities of the Japanese occupation to the conflict between Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists and the Communist movement. This edition of Lopez's acclaimed account features new photographs, most of which have never before been published. Relating how the 23rd Fighter Group continued to win battles even as the Japanese gained ground, Into the Teeth of the Tiger is the humorous and insightful memoir of an ace pilot caught in the paradox of victory in retreat.

The badge is derived from that of its original parent formation, 7th Armoured Division. The design was changed in significant details and comprised a white circular background, with red border, enclosing the rat. The rat appears as green, brown or grey, some perhaps being originally green that suffered degradation through wear. The green rat seems to have been the intended colour and was adopted as a reminder of the unit's service in the Burma jungle and was known as the 'jungle rat'. This badge was adopted some time after the Brigade returned from Burma at the end of 1942 and was definitely in use when the Brigade went to Italy in May 1944. On the outbreak of war in 1939 the Brigade was a Regular Army formation in Egypt with the title of Light Armoured Brigade (Egypt). It was redesignated on 16 February 1940 as 7th Light Armoured Brigade, and was further re-titled on 16 April 1940 as 7th Armoured Brigade. It became an Armoured Brigade Group on 1 March 1942, reverting to an armoured brigade on 4 June 1943. On 1 May 1945 it was redesignated and reorganized as an armoured brigade Type B, that is without an infantry component and outside a divisional organization. The formation was initially under command of British Troops Egypt but joined the Mobile (later 7th Armoured) Division in December 1939. It fought with 7th Armoured until November 1941 when it was withdrawn and at the beginning of 1942 was  sent to Burma where it arrived at Rangoon on 21 February, with just two regiments under command, 7 Hussars and 2RTR. The Brigade fought in the retreat from Burma and went to India at the end of May 1942. At the beginning of October 1942 the Brigade was sent to join 'Paiforce' to deal with the unrest in Iraq and Syria. It was withdrawn to Egypt at the end of September 1943. The Brigade deployed to Italy at the beginning of May 1944 where it fought throughout the campaign to the final thrust through the Po Valley. At the conclusion of hostilities it formed part of the occupation forces in Austria.
