Edenvale is a town on the East Rand in Gauteng, South Africa. Modern Edenvale has become a very well known part of Greater Johannesburg. It lies about halfway between the O.R. Tambo International Airport and the Johannesburg city centre and is located 12km by road from Sandton and about 9km from the closest Gautrain station. Edenvale is a very quiet town which ranges from the middle class areas such as Eastleigh and Croyden to the upper class areas such as Dowerglen and Edenglen. Much of that has changed as it has been widely diversified by Southern African foreigners, mainly: Zimbabweans, Zambians and Malawians. It also hosts a large population of Portuguese and Italian inhabitants.[citation needed] In the recent five to six years the area to the north of Edenvale (Modderfontein) has expanded significantly. Two malls have been erected, Greenstone and Stoneridge mall, as well as an array of complexes and townhouses, in an area now called Greenstone Hill and Greenstone Park, just above Illiondale. This recent, yet rapid influx of infrastructure and added commercial business has bankrupted businesses in Van Riebeeck avenue (also known as Edenvale town) forcing numerous store owners to liquidate their capital investments The neighbouring suburbs are Acacia Park, Antwerp, Eastleigh, Edenvale, Illiondale, Longmeadow, Marais Steyn Park, Modderfontein, Rembrandt Park CONTACT:  Lindiwe Makgeta

Pyracantha is a genus of thorny evergreen large shrubs in the family Rosaceae, with common names firethorn or pyracantha. They are native to an area extending from Southeast Europe east to Southeast Asia, resemble and are related to Cotoneaster, but have serrated leaf margins and numerous thorns (Cotoneaster is thornless). The plants reach up to 6 m (20 ft) tall. The flowers are produced during late spring and early summer; the pomes develop from late summer, and mature in late autumn. Pyracanthas are valuable ornamental plants, grown in gardens for their decorative flowers and fruit, often very densely borne. Their dense thorny structure makes them particularly valued in situations where an impenetrable barrier is required. The aesthetic characteristics of pyracanthas, in conjunction with their home security qualities, makes them an alternative to artificial fences and walls. They are also good shrubs for a wildlife garden, providing dense cover for roosting and nesting birds, summer flowers for bees and an abundance of berries as a food source. Pyracantha berries are mildly poisonous as they contain Cyanogenic glycosides and can cause mild gastro-intestinal problems; they are edible only when crushed and washed under running water. They have been made into jelly. Pyracantha make fantastic bonsai specimens.   Nigella sativa is an annual flowering plant, native to south and southwest Asia. It grows to 2030 cm (7.911.8 in) tall, with finely divided, linear (but not thread-like) leaves. The flowers are delicate, and usually coloured pale blue and white, with five to ten petals. The fruit is a large and inflated capsule composed of three to seven united follicles, each containing numerous seeds. The seed is used as a spice. In English, Nigella sativa seed is variously called fennel flower, nutmeg flower, black caraway, Roman coriander, and black cumin. Other names used, sometimes misleadingly, are onion seed and black sesame, both of which are similar-looking, but unrelated. It is used as part of the spice mixture paanch phoran or panch phoron (meaning a mixture of five spices) and by itself in a great many recipes in Bengali cookery and most recognizably in naan bread. The Turkish name rek otu literally means "bun's herb" from its use in flavouring the rek buns. Such braided-dough buns are widespread in the cuisines of Turkey and its neighbours (see Tsoureki). In Bosnian, the Turkish name for N. sativa is spelled as ?urekot. The seed is used in Bosnia, and particularly its capital Sarajevo, to flavour pastries (Bosnian: somun) often baked on Muslim religious holidays. Nigella sativa has a pungent bitter taste and smell. It is used primarily in confectionery and liquors. Peshawari naan is, as a rule, topped with kalonji seeds. Nigella is also used in Armenian string cheese, a braided string cheese called majdouleh or majdouli in the Middle East. Haworthia is a large genus of small succulent plants, mostly endemic to South Africa. Like Gasteria and Aloe, they are members of the family Asphodeloideae and they generally resemble miniature aloes, except in their flowers, which are characteristic in appearance. Horticulturally they are popular rockery garden and container plants. Typically they range from 4 cm to 20 cm high, depending on the species, though the inflorescences of some species may exceed 40 cm. Solitary or clump-forming most species have firm, tough leaves, usually dark green in color, whereas others are softer and are window plants with translucent panels through which sunlight can reach internal photosynthetic tissues. Their flowers are small, white and very similar between species. But their leaves show wide variations even within one species.           The charm of Haworthias is in their small size, ease of growth, and the almost infinite variation of their delightful leaves. Haworthias rarely require a pot larger than 10cm in diameter making them ideally suited for a bright windowsill. Perhaps the biggest problem you will encounter when growing Haworthias is that they tend to be addictive! Haworthia attenuata var. radula is a South African indigenous succulent. This variety of Haworthia attenuata, an endemic species, is differentiated because of its smaller and more numerous tubercles. The leaves are rougher rather than tuberculate. The leaves are more slender and longer. It is a very attractive plant in cultivation as the many tubercles give the plant a silvery appearance. Haworthia attenuata var. radula is an easy species and doesn't require any special growing conditions.

Physalis peruviana is the plant and its fruit, also known as Cape gooseberry (South Africa), Inca berry, Aztec berry, golden berry, giant ground cherry, Peruvian groundcherry and sometimes simply Physalis. It is indigenous to South America, but has been cultivated in England since the late 18th century and in South Africa in the region of the Cape of Good Hope since at least the start of the 19th century. Physalis peruviana is closely related to the tomatillo, also a member of the genus Physalis. As a member of the plant family Solanaceae, it is more distantly related to a large number of edible plants, including tomato, eggplant, potato and other members of the nightshades. Despite its name, it is not closely related to any of the cherry, Ribes gooseberry, Indian gooseberry, or Chinese gooseberry. The fruit is a smooth berry, resembling a miniature, spherical, yellow tomato. Removed from its bladder-like calyx, it is about the size of a marble, about 12 cm in diameter. Like a tomato, it contains numerous small seeds. It is bright yellow to orange in colour, and it is sweet when ripe, with a characteristic, mildly tart flavour, making it ideal for snacks, pies, or jams. It is relished in salads and fruit salads, sometimes combined with avocado. Also, because of the fruit's decorative appearance, it is popular in restaurants as an exotic garnish for desserts. A prominent feature is the inflated, papery calyx enclosing each berry. The calyx is accrescent until the fruit is fully grown; at first it is of normal size, but after the petals fall it continues to grow until it forms a protective cover around the growing fruit. If the fruit is left inside the intact calyx husks, its shelf life at room temperature is about 3045 days. According to analyses by the USDA, a 100 g serving of Cape gooseberries is low in calories and contains modest levels of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B1 and vitamin B3, while other nutrients are at low levels. Basic research on the cape gooseberry has provided preliminary evidence that its constituents, possibly polyphenols and/or carotenoids, may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The crude extract of the fruit-bearing plant has in vitro evidence for activity against markers of inflammation and lung cancer. It has also shown possible properties in vitro against diabetes and hypertension mechanisms. Some withanolides isolated from the plant may have anticancer activity. In folk medicine, Physalis peruviana is thought to be a medicinal herb to treat diseases, none of which has been confirmed in human clinical trials as treatable by Cape gooseberry or its extracts. In South Africa, cutworms are the most important of the many insect pests that attack the Cape gooseberry in seedbeds; red spiders after plants have been established in the field; and the potato tuber moth if the Cape gooseberry is in the vicinity of potato fields. Birds eat the fruits if not repelled. In South Africa, the most troublesome diseases are powdery mildew and soft brown scale. The plants are prone to root rots and viruses if on poorly drained soil or if carried over to a second year. Eastern Cape Veld Flowers by Eily Gledhill 1981, 2nd edition, Published by the Department of Nature and Environmental Conservation of the Cape Provincial Administration, Cape Town Preface to the first edition and preface to the second edition by Eily Gledhill, 276 pages, 4 color plates. Fine line drawings by the author. There are 554 species from 125 families described. Hardcover in good condition, front and back covers are a bit stained, spine presents foxing. Owner's signature inside and his stamp on the title page. Pages clean, nice tight binding. ~ Highly collectable book. Eily Gledhill (1914-2007) described a number of new species and worked on a revision of the genus Albuca. She also published ‘The genus Dioscorea in the Cape Province west of East London' in 1967. Many of her numerous publications were illustrated by herself with accurate black- and-white drawings. Furthermore, her book published in 1969 and with a second edition in 1981, The Eastern Cape veld flowers, in which she describes 554 species from 125 families, each illustrated by her fine line drawings, is still of great value to students of botany and the public at large  In the preface she writes: ‘If this guide assists owners of land and visitors to know more about the plants of the eastern Cape, it will have achieved its object, for any one who becomes interested in this unique flora cannot fail to realise why it needs to be protected’. Please familiarise yourself with the shipping info below Shipping Rates are as listed below Approximate processing and transit times are listed below PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT SHIP OUTSIDE OF SOUTH AFRICA

Parkinsonia is a genus of flowering plants in the pea family, Fabaceae. It contains about 12 species that are native to semi-desert regions of Africa and the Americas. They are large shrubs or small trees growing to 5–12 m tall, dry season deciduous, with sparse, open, thorny crowns and green bark. The leaves are pinnate, sometimes bipinnate, with numerous small leaflets; they are only borne for a relatively short time after rains, with much of the photosynthesis carried out by the green twigs and branches. The flowers are symmetrical or nearly so, with five yellow or white petals.           Parkinsonia africana commonly known as Wild Green-hair tree in English and Wilde Groenhaarboom, Lemoenhout, Lemoendoring, Lemoendoringboom, Thaboom, Waterboom, Wildelemoen or Peulboom in Afrikaans is a South African indigenous species found in the Limpopo, Northern Cape and North West Provinces. Usually it is a thin-stemmed and scraggly shrub with smooth, pale brown to yellow-green bark through which it photosynthesizes Protruding from the bark are straight, yellow-green to pale brown thorns, also thought to aid in photosynthesis. Mostly the leaves are absent and those that are seen are compound, the leaflets being pale yellow-green and tiny.
