Yale University Press 1998. Hard cover with dust cover. 397 pages. Very good condition; like new. Under 1kg. A sailing ship that becomes stalled with its bow to the wind is said to be "in irons." In this groundbreaking examination of America`s Revolutionary War economy, the phrase is an apt metaphor for the inability of that economy to free itself from the constraints of Britain`s navy. Richard Buel Jr. here investigates for the first time the influence of Britain`s navy on the American revolutionary economy, particularly its agricultural sector, and the damage that Britain inflicted by seizing major colonial centers and denying Americans access to overseas markets. Drawing on documents newly culled from American, British, and French archives, the author shows how the French alliance, naval operations in the Atlantic and Caribbean, military operations in North America, and the policies of state and continental authorities contributed to the collapse and then revival of the revolutionary economy. Buel places the American economy in international context and discusses how both Spain and France created the conditions—though sometimes inadvertently—that bolstered the economic survival of the infant republic. Richard Buel Jr. is professor of history at Wesleyan University. He is the author of Dear Liberty and co-author of The Way of Duty. His book Securing the Revolution received a Pulitzer Prize nomination.

WAUGH, Auberon; CRONJE, Suzanne. Biafra: Britain's Shame. London: Michael Joseph, 1969. First Edition. "This book not only seeks to portray the plight of a courageous fighting to preserve its independence, but is an indictment of the role played by the British government in the Nigeria-Biafra war. On July 6th 1967 Nigeria invaded Biafra & began the most savage war in the history of West Africa: a war whose successful prosecution inevitably involved the partial annihilation of an ethnic group, the Ibos, and in which nearly two million civilians, mostly old people and children, have died through starvation alone. For what reasons is the present British administration prepared to condone genocide as a means to preserving the unity of a federated Nigeria along the frontiers mapped out in 1914?" 118pp., numerous b+w plates. Good. Ex-lib with usual markings. Dw in protective plastic sleeve. Hardcover. (##2740)

On 17 March 2003, Robin Cook, Leader of the House of Commons and former Foreign Secretary, resigned from the Cabinet in protest against the coming war in Iraq. His resignation speech against that war prompted the first standing ovation in the history of the House and marked the end of the ministerial career of one of Labour's most brilliant politicians. His arguments against that war are of profound interest and importance to American readers. For the two years prior to his resignation, Robin Cook kept a diary, a personal record of Labour's second term, that forms the core of this narrative. "The Point of Departure" is Robin Cook's unvarnished account of this dramatic period in British political history. Though surprised by his abrupt dismissal in 2001 as Foreign Secretary, he became determined to effect the changes in Parliamentary democracy that he believed were essential if Parliament was to move into the twenty-first century. As Tony Blair told Cook on offering him leadership of the House of Commons, "This is the job for you." Drawing on firsthand experiences in the Commons and the Cabinet, of encounters in conferences and corridors and late-night conversations, Cook details his gathering disillusionment with Tony Blair's change of direction, which he believes to be profoundly mistaken, and, above all, the change in foreign policy that led the United Kingdom away from its destiny in Europe and into participation in President Bush's war in Iraq. This is the inside story of a government in power -- and of the tensions between those who govern. But above all it is the story of a politician who genuinely wanted to bring democracy closer to the people, but who saw agovernment increasingly detached from the values of himself and his party, and who developed a growing conviction that the government position on Iraq was morally, diplomatically, and politically wrong.

The design of the coin refers to the tragedy of the first global military conflict. The Great War, as it was called before the war with Nazi Germany, put an end to the existence of four empires: Ottoman, German, Austro-Hungarian and Russian. The political map and social life of Europe were changed forever. Being a member of the Triple Entente, United Kingdom suffered significant losses in World War I, despite the fact the theatres of war werenメt situated on its territory. One side of the coin depicts military hardware and soldiers of the early XX century, the background is colored British flag. The Great War words are minted above the image, and the dates 1914-1918 are placed below. The inscriptions are separated with stars pattern going along the rim.The other side of the token designed to honor victims of WWI. One can see dark silhouettes of a soldier and a tomb cross. The grave is covered with red poppy flowers which symbolize the wartime remembrance in English-speaking countries. There are names of the bloodiest battles of the Great War minted on this side such as Verdun, Somme, Gallipoli, Ypres and others. ____________________________________________________ Feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Although this is a history book, it is also extremely topical: the story of America and Britain coming together as increasingly close partners in the face of a global threat of war. But this is not 2003 and Iraq, but 1940 and the start of World War II. And, in an inversion of 2003, this is the story of the USA coming to the aid of Britain. Norman Moss's book is about the 19 weeks of World War II between May and September 1940 - a whirlwind of events that saw the swift fall of France followed by the evacuation of Dunkirk, air raids over London and the Battle of Britain, with Britain's entire safety and independence threatened as never before in modern times. Though the USA did not formally enter the war until after Pearl Harbor in 1941, as Moss shows, it was these crucial 19 weeks that swung the US from a position of defiant isolationism to a position of committed support for Britain's cause against Nazi Germany, and ultimately forged America's long-term interventionist role in the world. "19 Weeks" tells the story from both sides of the Atlantic, and from the point of view of both the policymakers and the ordinary citizenry. It follows closely the developing relationship between Roosevelt and Churchill, Roosevelt's battle for the hearts and minds of his countrymen, and the far-reaching consequences for Britain's future role in the world, the seeds of which were irrevocably sewn during this brief, crucial epoch.Ex-library; with stamps and stickers otherwise good
