Author(s): various  Title:       The Inter-Services Journal on  Aircraft Recognition, Volumes I, II, III   ISBN: none  Publisher/place: Ministry of Aircraft Production (UK)  Year of Publication: 1942 - 1945   Binding: hardcover (large format)  Dustjacket: none  Weight: 2510g  Notes/Condition:    This is a collection of monthly journals which have been bound together.  The first is dated September 1942 and the last September 1945.  The last couple of journals are marked as "Restricted".   Binding used is a hardback with cloth cover.   The cloths have some wear around the edges, and at the head and tail of the spine.  On the front, at the bottom right corner, there seems to be some water damage, though this has not gone through to the front end-page.  An ex-libris plate of the previous owner is on the front end-page.  Binding is intact and sound; no loose pages.   Many of these journals seem to have been folded in four, before binding.  It would not have been possible to fold them this way after binding. Most of the individual journals have the inscription "A.M Campbell, MASTER COPY" on the front cover (the ex-libris plate is for "K.B. Newman incidentally).   Please see pictures, as these form part of the description.

This book captures the experience of the South African Air Force helicopter pilot as never before; from 'rookie' to seasoned combat aviator in one of history's most intense counter-insurgency conflicts - the South African Border War. Nick Lithgow's work relates the gruelling endurance of SADF National Service and its grind, grind, grind... until one day, helicopter drills with an SAAF Puma, saw him optimistically apply for pilot training. Called to Pretoria, Nick completed the mandatory tests before returning to the Border to complete his duty. At the end of his National Service, Nick was surprised to receive instructions to report to the Air Force Gymnasium in Valhalla. Here he began training began in earnest with Harvard fixed wing trainers and the Impala jet, before long Nick had progressed to rotary aircraft - training on the Alouette and graduating to the Puma under the guidance of one of the SAAF's legendary instructors, 'Monster Wilkins'. An operational tour in Rhodesia followed with deployment to the South West African/Namibian Border. Here Search and Rescue, troop carrying and close air support operations became the order of the day -an intense cycle of briefings and operations with the ever present threat of small arms fire and surface to air missiles. LZ Hot!  is an unrivaled work - it relates the drama of recovering downed fighter pilots under fire, responding to the horror of mine-strikes with soldiers dreadfully injured and needing urgent evacuation, or deep penetration operations into Angola in support of South African Special Forces. It also relates the candour of mess life, the characters and incidents that amuse, delivering much needed relief from the demands of operational flying - Nick's accounts of mess dinner high-jinks are especially entertaining and will be recognisable to all who have served! Flying mountain rescue missions and responding to terrifying shipwrecks, a crazed Military Policeman during a casevac, Lithgow takes all in his stride. LZ Hot!  is a stunning, captivating read. Paperback, 176 pages 16 colour & b/w photos.  Published December 2012

The South African Air Force (SAAF), formed on 1 February 1920, is the second oldest air force in the Commonwealth. The air arm played a major role in securing victory for the Allies during the Second World War, in the 1948/49 Berlin Airlift, and in Korea in the 1950s. The SAAF assisted Rhodesia in the 1960s and 70s, made a major contribution to the Border or Bush war in South West Africa and Angola, participated in the transition to a new democracy in South Africa and continuously supports South African peace missions in Africa. It has also assisted in countless relief and rescue missions in southern Africa throughout this entire period. However, the SAAF is not just about aircraft and ordnance; it is made up of people and it is in this compilation that these people, airmen and ground crew alike, find their voice. These are their stories, all told in the first person by the actual participants as unvarnished, unabbreviated and intensely immediate and personal recollections. Through their stories of heroism, duty, adventure and tragedy, the reader will follow the history of the SAAF from 1939 to the present day. To complement the stories, the final chapter includes a collection of squadron pub songs from the Second World War, Korea and the Border War. Paperback, 338  pages 130 colour & b/w photos, 8 maps Published February 2013 (First Edition)

Air Aces - Christopher Shores - Hardcover Description from the book flap: An Ace is generally accepted as a fighter pilot who has shot down five or more enemy aircraft. Since the beginning of air fighting each war and campaign has produced its air aces. This book not only describes the fighting careers of the famous fighter pilots, but places their achievements in the context of the conditions under which they fought. For example, the 352 victories of the Luftwaffe ace Erich Hartmann could only have been gained over the Russian Front in World War II. This exhaustively researched book contains a wealth of information on the air aces of modern warfare. Tables give statistics on all wars since 1914, including lesser known ones like the Russian Civil War and the Indo-Pakistan conflicts. Individual biographies are included on the greatest aces - Lufberry, Gabreski, Galland and Bong to name but a few. More than 250 color and B&W photographs. Condition: Acceptable
