MERCEDES BENZ ELEGANCE 270 CDI IN SOUTH AFRICA
Ultimately, the E270 CDi offers everything expected of a Mercedes-Benz. The strong engine and its sophisticated gearbox are just the icing on the cake. It's this torque peak - delivered anywhere from just off idle to about rpm - that gives the E270 its real character: a strong, urgent acceleration that pushes the car down the road. The standard five-speed automatic with its manual shift mode is well suited to the engine. The shifts are smooth and assured, and the gearbox has enough smarts of its own to know that it can hold higher gears on long uphill stretches and rely on the engine's torque to do the work. Typically for a full-sized Mercedes-Benz, the car also has a capable chassis that provides a quality ride (at the expense of a little body roll) with good composure and the ability to keep its wheels planted. The steering can feel a bit wooden at first, but it's certainly accurate enough and the car points very well. Safety, as you would expect, has been comprehensively addressed with anti-lock brakes with brake assist, brake-force distribution, stability control and traction control. Mercedes-Benz introduced the Sensotronic Brake Control system to the E-Class line-up in . This brake-by-wire system uses a series of sensors to read what the driver is doing and adjust the braking accordingly. Jump off the accelerator and onto the brake pedal and the car's brakes are already preparing for an emergency stop. The downside to this technology are the various whirrs and clicks from under the bonnet - where the system controlling the brakes is housed - even when the car is nursed along. And in case it's ever needed, the car boasts an impressive range of passive safety features, including dual front airbags, head airbags, side airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners. Luxury equipment hasn't been skimped on either, with dual-zone climate-control air-conditioning, power-operated front seats and a 10-speaker stereo with CD stacker.
