LETTERS FROM LADYSMITH

Subtitle: Eyewitness Accounts from the South African War Editor: Edward Spiers Publisher: Jonathan Ball () ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Softcover Pages: 192 Dimensions: 23.4 x 15.8 x 1.8 cm +++ Edited by Edward Spiers +++ Edward Spiers, a leading authority on the Victorian British army, presents a selection of letters from the siege of Ladysmith (). These 250 letters, which were published in different British newspapers, provide crucial insights into contemporary perceptions of the battles that preceded the siege, the onset of the siege itself, and the desperate and bloody attempts to relieve the town.  The letters vividly reflect the feelings of junior officers and other ranks as they struggled to cope with the demands of modern warfare. Their eyewitness testimonies provide firsthand commentary upon the events in Natal that shattered the prewar confidence in Britain.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales. Author: Philip Larken   Editor: Anthony Thwaite Publisher: Faber & Faber () Edition: First Edition ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket Pages: 475 Dimensions: 24 x 15.5 x 4 cm +++ by Philip Larken +++ Philip Larkin met Monica Jones at University College Leicester in autumn , when they were both twenty-four; he was the newly-appointed assistant librarian and she was an English lecturer. In Larkin moved to Belfast, and thence to Hull, while Monica remained in Leicester, becoming by turns his correspondent, lover and closest confidante, in a relationship which lasted over forty years until the poet's death in . This remarkable unpublished correspondence only came to light after Monica Jones' death in , and consists of nearly two thousand letters, postcards and telegrams, which chronicle - day by day, sometimes hour by hour - every aspect of Larkin's life and the convolutions of their relationship.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. A LETTER FROM PARIS | ERIC MIYENI

Subtitle: Essays and Photographs Author: Eric Miyeni Photographer: Eric Miyeni With Author's Inscription Publisher: Pan Macmillan () Edition: First Edition ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Condition: Very Good - Laminate lifting from bottom back cover and from a small portion of the front cover edge, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding: Softcover Pages: 163 Dimensions: 23 x 18.7 x 0.9 cm +++ by Eric Miyeni +++ In October Eric Miyeni, accompanied by his trusty pen and camera, spent two weeks in Paris keenly observing the city's architecture, its history, its people and its culture. The result is an accomplished collection of essays and black and white photographs that are quirky, often poignant, quite astute, really funny and truly different in their take on the subject matter. For once the tables are turned in a positive way: an African is observing instead of being observed, and passing comment instead of being commented on.   A passion for books and a passion for collecting fine editions was the recipe that created the successful group of bookshops in Johannesburg called Bookdealers. The group started thirty years ago with one store in the quirky suburb of Yeoville and has grown through the years to a total of five shops, plus our online sales.
