1930S FRENCH BAKELITE AND BRASS BRACELET SEAHORSES DESIGN IN SOUTH AFRICA
Rich red marbled French bakelite arches topped with detailed seahorses all set in a brass frame that dates from the 1930s. Created in France by Jean Painlevé. A predecessor of Jacques Cousteau, Painlevé (1902-1989) was an actor, film director, composer, militant, biologist best known for his films on marine life – and the unusual range of jewellery that he developed alongside it. Painlevé jewellery – mostly, but not exclusively included his beloved seahorses – was sold from a chic shop in Paris.
